Front Cover SOS March 2017-04The new RME Fireface UFX+ audio interface gets a review from Sound On Sound

The RME Fireface UFX+ has been given the seal of approval by Sound On Sound, who've provided a comprehensive review of RME's most powerful interface to date in their March 2017 issue (as well as featuring the UFX+ on their front cover). This is the second review from a major pro audio publication, with the UFX+ previously awarded a 10 out of 10 from MusicTech in January earlier this year.

The review covers a broad range of topics, from the vast amount of I/O options to the routing and mixing flexibility of TotalMix FX. Reviewer Sam Inglis explains "the new flagship of RME’s range exemplifies all the qualities we’ve come to expect from the German manufacturers: excellent low-latency performance, pristine sound quality and immensely flexible built-in mixing and processing".

"RME have always treated their customers as intelligent adults
who need to get things done, not as consumers buying into a brand economy"

With the UFX+, RME decided for the first time to feature both Thunderbolt and USB 3 technology. Having developed their own in-house USB technologies, RME have long been ahead of the curve when it comes to performance, with SOS also picking up on the fact that RME's USB technology can easily match Thunderbolt in terms of latency. "Once again, RME have taken it upon themselves to show that the fault does not lie with the protocol, but with the implementation. As a result, what’s really impressive about the UFX+ is not so much that it performs well when connected via Thunderbolt, because so do most Thunderbolt interfaces. It’s that it can match this performance when connected via USB 3.”

Of course, RME's industry-leading drivers were also a talking point. "Whereas other manufacturers have allowed themselves to become dependent on third-party driver code, sometimes with unfortunate consequences for latency and stability, RME have always focussed on coding their own rock-solid and lightning-fast drivers."

To finish off the review, SOS noted that an RME device really is an investment, with the company's track record of providing unsurpassed longevity and reliability. “There used to be a saying in the world of business computing that no-one ever got fired for buying IBM. In the world of music computing, that role falls to RME, and the UFX+ is about as safe a bet you can make.”
