Greek radio station Pepper 96.6 FM have joined a growing number of stations around the world in upgrading their studios with the Calrec Type R, Calrec’s modular IP-based audio console designed specifically for radio and broadcast production.

On the air for over 10 years now, Pepper FM delivers a variety of daily music shows to its roughly 5 million listeners, playing a selection of contemporary musical styles such as jazz, rock, funk and reggae, as well as hosting the occasional talk show.

The new system comprises a single fader panel and LSP touch-screen, illustrating how Type R’s modular design can provide even smaller stations with the building blocks for moving to a modern IP workflow, with the option to further expand at a later date if required. The deal was overseen by Calrec’s Greek partner Bon Studio S.A.

“Calrec’s Type R for Radio has many features that are highly valuable to us,” says Anastasios Labropoulos, Technical Director at Pepper 96.6 FM. “Some of the most important ones are around IP technology; expandability for the future; ease of utilization; ease of upgrading software; and last but not least, the number of I/Os and faders.”

“Since we are primarily a music station, we had no need for a larger console; the current configuration of the Type R with specific I/O and faders fully covers our needs. Moreover, our co-operation with Bon Studio S.A., Calrec’s distributor in Greece, has been over many years and our trust was crucial to our final choice for purchasing the Type R for our station.”

Each Calrec Type R system is powered by a Core, with each Core featuring enough resources to power up to three different console configurations simultaneously, either locally or remotely.

Compliant with SMPTE 2110, Type R is fully compatible with the NMOS IS-04 and IS-05 discovery and connection management specifications. The intuitive and versatile GUI allows for simple and more extensive levels of control, and can be easily customised to meet the requirements of any radio station.

“We are thrilled to have Type R for Radio in our OnAir studio and are very satisfied with its configuration and seamless operation,” adds Labropoulos. “If I had to choose from a number of impressive characteristics, I would strongly emphasize the excellent mic preamps, which we regard to be of great quality!”

Graham Murray, International Sales Manager at Calrec, commented “Clearly, there’s a need for radio products that are IP-native and that are affordable and expandable as the industry continues to move in that direction, and that’s one of the key strengths of our Type R for Radio console. Even in a minimal configuration, Pepper FM is able to handle all its requirements in a small footprint and still delivers superb audio quality around the clock.”
