RME ADI-2 FS Overview – The affordable mastering AD/DA converter

9th April 2021 5:35 pm

RME’s simplified 2-channel AD/DA converter offers high-precision audio conversion for high-end recording studio, mastering and Hi-Fi applications

The ADI-2 Series has quickly become one of the most popular device ranges in the RME catalogue, presenting the best in high-end A-D and D-A conversion currently available from the German pro audio manufacturer.

Whilst the feature-packed RME ADI-2 Pro FS R and ADI-2 DAC FS remain the most eye-catching models in the line-up – with their slick all-black finishes, wireless remote-control, and numerous DSP-based sound shaping options – the stripped-back RME ADI-2 FS offers the same award-winning conversion in a simplified, cost-effective package.

Check out our overview video below for an introduction to this no-fuss, high-end AD/DA solution designed for studios, mastering engineers and even Hi-Fi enthusiasts seeking transparent and highly accurate audio conversion at a price-point that won’t break the bank.

RME ADI-2 FS – High Precision 2-Channel AD/DA Converter

Developed as a stripped-down version of the popular ADI-2 Pro FS R and ADI-2 DAC FS, the ADI-2 FS offers the same high-end audio conversion and advanced circuit design of its siblings in an affordable, no-frills package that‘s perfect for recording, monitoring and mastering applications, as well as for audiophile and Hi-Fi enthusiasts looking to add reference-class conversion to their home listening setup.

In addition the ADI-2 also features SteadyClock FS, RME’s latest digital clocking technology that provides wordclock accuracy down to a FemtoSecond, resulting in pristine, transparent audio reproduction and capture, as well as enhancing the sound quality of other digital audio devices when used as Clock Master.

And with a selection of commonly-found digital connections, the ADI-2 FS is an ideal accompaniment for existing RME interface users, upgrading the sound of any RME device with the latest mastering-grade conversion and clocking, whilst also providing additional analogue I/O and an extra headphone output.

Back Panel

The back panel of the ADI-2 FS features the majority of the I/O, with Neutrik combo connections for sending balanced line level input signals via XLR or TRS cabling, as well as support for unbalanced TS cables.

Analogue outputs are provided on separate XLR and TRS connections, for connecting with other balanced and unbalanced equipment respectively.

Digital I/O is provided via SPDIF, ADAT and AES/EBU, offering maximum compatibility when connecting to other digital audio devices.

SPDIF comes in the form of both standard coaxial and optical connectivity, with the optical I/O also supporting the first 2 channels of an ADAT signal, for connecting the ADI-2 FS to a wide range of audio interfaces.

The coaxial SPDIF I/O is also AES-3 compatible, with AES signals detected automatically thanks to the ADI-2 FS’s advanced circuit design.

Power is provided via the included power supply, with a locking connector ensuring the cable remains securely in place once in use. And with an operating range spanning from 9-15 volts, the ADI-2 FS can even be battery-powered for mobile use.

Front Panel

The front panel features a simple and streamlined user interface, with a selection of status LEDs; input level metering, with multiple brightness stages and peak hold functionality; and five buttons and a volume control.

Starting from the left, the analogue Inputs’ reference level can be switched between +4, +13 and +19 dBu via the first button marked LEVEL. When set to DIGITAL, this button disables the AD section, allowing the ADI-2 FS to operate as a dedicated D to A monitoring solution and format converter, and switching the input’s level metering to monitor the digital input signal.

The clock section allows the user to set the desired sample rate, all the way up to 96 kHz in Double Speed (or DS) mode, and 192 kHz in Quad Speed (or QS on the front panel), whilst the Digital Input and Output buttons allow for easy switching between the ADI-2 FS’s various digital I/O.

Like the input section, the ADI-2 FS’s output reference level can be switched between +4, +13 and +19 dBu via the LEVEL button. If the ANALOGUE button is selected, the DA section of the device is disabled, allowing the ADI-2 FS to be used for a variety of other specialist applications, such as an analogue impedance converter and preamp; unbalanced to balanced signal converter (and vice versa); or as an analogue distribution amplifier.

Finally we have the ADI-2 FS’s headphone output. No mere afterthought, this dedicated headphone connection has been specially adapted from the RME ADI-2 Pro FS R’s “Extreme Power” output, offering up to 0.7 watts per channel, and an output impedance of 0.1 ohm.

With a maximum output level of +19 dBu, as well as a very low THD of -110dB, the ADI-2 FS’s High Power headphone output can provide high-end, transparent headphone monitoring and listening enjoyment with even the most sensitive of headphones.
