A Universal Pictures and Working Title Films production, the film&#8217;s all-star cast includes Rebel Wilson, Idris Elba, Ian McKellan, Judi Dench, Taylor Swift and James Corden.<\/p>\n<p>A long-time RME user, Chaga opted for an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.synthax.co.uk\/rme\/madi-aes\/rme-fireface-ufx-plus\/\">RME Fireface UFX+<\/a> with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.synthax.co.uk\/rme\/accessories\/rme-arc-usb-advanced-remote-control\/\">ARC USB remote control<\/a> for the project, and the flexibility offered by RME&#8217;s included <a title=\"Find out more about RME Technologies\" href=\"https:\/\/www.synthax.co.uk\/latest\/rme-technologies\/\">TotalMix FX<\/a> software.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I chose the Fireface UFX+ specifically for the project, and as an investment for the future,&#8221; Chaga says, &#8220;for the box&#8217;s versatility, and for its ability to handle most audio and I\/O formats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.synthax.co.uk\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/RME-Fireface-UFX-Front-Back-Panels-Synthax-Audio-UK-1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-14604\" src=\"https:\/\/www.synthax.co.uk\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/RME-Fireface-UFX-Front-Back-Panels-Synthax-Audio-UK-1.jpg\" alt=\"RME Fireface UFX+ - Front &amp; Back Panels - Synthax Audio UK\" width=\"560\" height=\"145\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.synthax.co.uk\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/RME-Fireface-UFX-Front-Back-Panels-Synthax-Audio-UK-1.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.synthax.co.uk\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/RME-Fireface-UFX-Front-Back-Panels-Synthax-Audio-UK-1-300x78.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.synthax.co.uk\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/RME-Fireface-UFX-Front-Back-Panels-Synthax-Audio-UK-1-768x198.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.synthax.co.uk\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/RME-Fireface-UFX-Front-Back-Panels-Synthax-Audio-UK-1-1024x265.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For <em>Cats<\/em>, the film&#8217;s director Tom Hooper (<em>Les Mis\u00e9rables, The King&#8217;s Speech<\/em>) took the unusual decision to film much of the vocals and instruments live, with the idea being to capture the feel of a live theatre production (in comparison with looking like a traditional film). These recordings were then combined with previous takes, along with some other pre-recorded material.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsually in musicals you would record the music and the vocals in the studio, and then by the time you get to filming, everyone mimes to the playback of that material,\u201d Chaga explains. \u201cAll the vocals for our film were recorded live, on set, as opposed to being pre-recorded. By having live musicians behind the camera, alongside the playback setup, we were able to provide our cast with the musical support they needed. Working in tandem with production sound mixer Simon Hayes, who captured each performance, Chaga relayed playback audio to the entire cast and crew through in-ear monitors, employing each of the RME Fireface UFX+\u2019s digital and analogue I\/O options.<\/p>\n<p>The RME ARC USB remote control and TotalMix FX software were then used for precise control over the process, with channels grouped together for quick control over the monitor feeds,&nbsp;using the jog wheel to control levels, and shortcut keys for tasks such as recalling \/ hiding the TotalMix FX window from view. \u201cThis allows us to instantly adapt to the performance in front of the camera and facilitate requests from actors and production,\u201d says Chaga.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think it is quite an elegant solution,&#8221; Chaga says. \u201cTo have only the necessary controls available, while removing the ability to unintentionally change anything you wouldn&#8217;t want to. Overall, the setup has performed beautifully. It is extremely flexible and solid.&#8221;<\/p><\/span>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cOverall, the setup has performed beautifully.<br> It is extremely flexible and solid.&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\n<p>&#8220;Having the standalone features of the interface and the mixing and routing flexibility of TotalMix FX, outside of the DAW, means I can rely on the Fireface as a safety net,\u201d Chaga explained. \u201cIf the DAW or the computer crashes, the UFX+ will still pass the live signal to our IEM mixer, Tom Barrow. That could be the difference between saving and ruining a take.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chaga also found the ability to lock the Fireface UFX+&#8217;s user interface extremely useful, along with saving the TotalMix FX setup as snapshots and workspaces.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.synthax.co.uk\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Totalmix_UFX.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-6355\" src=\"https:\/\/www.synthax.co.uk\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Totalmix_UFX.png\" alt=\"RME Fireface UFX - TotalMix FX - Synthax Audio UK\" width=\"301\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.synthax.co.uk\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Totalmix_UFX.png 1265w, https:\/\/www.synthax.co.uk\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Totalmix_UFX-300x206.png 300w, https:\/\/www.synthax.co.uk\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Totalmix_UFX-768x526.png 768w, https:\/\/www.synthax.co.uk\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Totalmix_UFX-1024x702.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 301px) 100vw, 301px\" \/><\/a>&#8220;If there are any changes that need to be made, I have to go through an extra step to make them, and once the user interface is locked nothing can be nudged accidentally,\u201d Chaga says. \u201cHaving the ability to save and recall snapshots\/workspaces means I can trace our workflow all the way back to day one, should I need to. There&#8217;s no ambiguity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Looking towards post-production of <em>Cats<\/em> this summer, Chaga said he&#8217;s considered reducing the size of his rig for the sake of mobility. One thing is for certain though he says, \u201cwherever I go, the UFX+ interface is coming with me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The highly anticipated film adaptation of Weber\u2019s popular musical is set to wrap up shooting this month at Warner Bros. Studios, in Leavesden, Hertfordshire, UK, with a release date set for Dec. 20, 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The musical stage-play \u2014 based on characters in T.S.
