Founded by musicians\/engineers Matthew Devenish and Paul Jones, the pair recently designed an artificial reverb system they call \u2018Nebula\u2019, in order to enhance the sound of acoustic spaces during live performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:14px\">The system operates by capturing audio through a pair of DPA microphones, which are connected to an <a title=\"RME Fireface 802 - Audio Interface - Synthax.co.uk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.synthax.co.uk\/rme\/firewire-usb\/rme-fireface-802\/\">RME Fireface 802 audio interface<\/a>. This is then processed by specially designed <g class=\"gr_ gr_5 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Punctuation only-del replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"5\" data-gr-id=\"5\">software,<\/g> and fed back into the room via the Fireface 802 to a series of Fohhn loudspeakers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:14px\">The result is the ability to alter the perceived acoustics of a venue, something which would usually require making physical changes to the building itself. The overall sound can be tailored to give the impression of a much grander space for example, supporting the performances of musicians and vocalists, as well as adding to the audience&#8217;s enjoyment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:14px\">We spoke to Matthew Devenish to find out more about the project, and why they chose the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.synthax.co.uk\/rme\/firewire-usb\/rme-fireface-802\/\" target=\"_blank\">RME Fireface 802<\/a> as the central hub for their system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.synthax.co.uk\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/MU-Mu-Audio-Nebula-Matthew-Devenish-Paul-Jones-01-Synthax-Audio-UK.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.synthax.co.uk\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/MU-Mu-Audio-Nebula-Matthew-Devenish-Paul-Jones-01-Synthax-Audio-UK-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"MU-Mu Audio Nebula - Matthew Devenish - Paul Jones - 01 - Synthax Audio UK\" class=\"wp-image-15077\" width=\"315\" height=\"253\">\n<\/a>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:14px\">\u201cPaul and I have been in business as Mu-Mu Audio for about 17 years,&nbsp;running location based recording studios as well as more recently Live&nbsp;Sound hire,\u201d Matthew tells us. \u201cBoth of us have been involved with Pro Audio for much&nbsp;longer, in Paul\u2019s case running a P.A company and as a performing&nbsp;musician, myself as a freelance recording engineer\/producer, and drummer and&nbsp;FOH engineer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:14px\">\u201cSome of the artists we\u2019ve worked with in either&nbsp;live or recording environments include Nigel Kennedy, John Etheridge,&nbsp;Alex Harvey, Vice Squad, Sean Lennon and&nbsp;Vincent Gallo, Lydia Lunch, Aphex Twin, and And Also The Trees.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:14px\">\u201cThe whole project came about after we received a phone call asking us to&nbsp;meet with Adam Munthe, the owner of Hellens Manor in Herefordshire, to discuss the&nbsp;acoustics of the big barn, a venue we\u2019ve used to record a&nbsp;number of albums since 2005.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:14px\">\u201cThe basic requirement from Adam was for the acoustics of the&nbsp;barn to be more sympathetic and supportive for classical music, i.e. longer reverb times with a diffuse <g class=\"gr_ gr_4 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"4\" data-gr-id=\"4\">soundfield<\/g>. Hellens Barn is a listed building <g class=\"gr_ gr_6 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"6\" data-gr-id=\"6\">however<\/g>, and a highly respected acoustics company had previously said it would&nbsp;involve a lot of physical change to the inside of the barn.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<center>\n<h4>A Legend Reborn &#8211; The RME Audio Fireface 802<\/h4>\n<br>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"639\" height=\"359\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IHRr_63gGFU\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/center>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:14px\">\u201cApart from&nbsp;potentially prohibitive costs, this approach would <g class=\"gr_ gr_7 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Punctuation replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"7\" data-gr-id=\"7\">of course<\/g> result in an&nbsp;unvarying acoustic. The barn isn&#8217;t just used for classical concerts &#8211; it\u2019s also used for recording as well as filming, and has events that require <g class=\"gr_ gr_45 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Grammar multiReplace\" id=\"45\" data-gr-id=\"45\">P.A.\u2019s<\/g> such as weddings and corporate meetings. Some of these uses benefit from the&nbsp;very dry acoustic that currently exists, but not all\u2026 Enter Mu-Mu!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:14px\">\u201cWe organised to run some trials of potential approaches in the <g class=\"gr_ gr_26 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-del replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"26\" data-gr-id=\"26\">barn,<\/g> and&nbsp;were very encouraged by the results. We were then given the green light, and&nbsp;installed the system we call \u2018Nebula\u2019. Our approach is ideal for these sorts of venues, as it&#8217;s both <g class=\"gr_ gr_5 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"5\" data-gr-id=\"5\">cost effective<\/g> and requires <g class=\"gr_ gr_6 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"6\" data-gr-id=\"6\">minimum<\/g> of ingress into the building.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.synthax.co.uk\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/The-Big-Barn-Hellens-Manor-Synthax-Audio-UK.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.synthax.co.uk\/latest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/The-Big-Barn-Hellens-Manor-Synthax-Audio-UK-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"The Big Barn - Hellens Manor - Synthax Audio UK\" class=\"wp-image-15082\" width=\"315\" height=\"253\"><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2>RME Fireface 802 &#8211; 60-Channel USB &amp; Firewire audio interface<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:14px\">RME&#8217;s design philosophy has always been to provide highly detailed yet transparent audio, making the Fireface 802 perfect for this project and enabling the Nebula to sound as natural as possible. The microphone preamps and DA converters deliver recording and playback in an &#8216;uncoloured&#8217; form, giving engineers and musicians the freedom to affect their sound as a stylistic choice via the use of processing and effects, or from microphones and external preamps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 style=\"text-align:center\">\u201cWe have consistently found the reliability of RME products<br>to be second\u00a0to none.\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:14px\">This methodology is one of the reasons RME devices have become so popular in <g class=\"gr_ gr_4 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Grammar only-ins doubleReplace replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"4\" data-gr-id=\"4\">classical<\/g> recording &#8211; we&#8217;ve previously spoken with engineer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.synthax.co.uk\/latest\/2015\/08\/05\/recording-classical-music-with-phil-rowlands-and-rme\/\">Phil Rowlands<\/a> about his use of RME for orchestral recording, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.synthax.co.uk\/latest\/2017\/08\/31\/oscar-torres-rme-audio-interfaces\/\">Oscar Torres<\/a>, who told us that \u201cRME has become a standard of sorts in classical music recording&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:14px\">\u201cThe Nebula system comprises of eight speakers in an array down the beams of&nbsp;the barn, with each speaker individually addressable for level and delay&nbsp;if needed,&#8221; Matthew continues. &#8220;Above the performance <g class=\"gr_ gr_5 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"5\" data-gr-id=\"5\">area<\/g> we have a spaced pair of DPA 4011 cardioid microphones, to capture the live audio. For our A to D system we chose the Fireface 802, which is being used as a pair of microphone preamplifiers and A\/D converters, to feed the digital audio into our software for live processing.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:14px\">&#8220;This is connected&nbsp;to the Fohhn Speaker Controller, with the Nebula Software running on a <g class=\"gr_ gr_4 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"4\" data-gr-id=\"4\">rack&nbsp;mounted<\/g> computer with <g class=\"gr_ gr_5 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"5\" data-gr-id=\"5\">screen<\/g>, with all of it neatly fitted into a lockable&nbsp;rack unit backstage. When we&#8217;re using it for our recording work, we use it extensively to set up  monitor mixes, pre and post DAW, and route signals to different outputs if necessary.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:14px\">The Nebula system has already been proving a success at Hellens Manor, with musicians and engineers commenting on the natural sound of the reverb.
