David Treywin (Technical Manager at Maidstone) <\/em>discusses the iconic TV studios’ recent choice of the Calrec Type R.<\/h2>\nMaidstone Studios, one of the largest independent television studio complexes in the UK, has chosen to enhance their audio facilities with Calrec’s modular Type R console.<\/p>\n
The studio is well-known for hosting a variety of popular light entertainment shows, live sports coverage, film and esports events, including renowned TV shows such as Catchphrase<\/em>, Blankety Blank<\/em>, Family Fortunes<\/em> and Alan Partridge<\/em><\/p>\nOther notable shows previously shot at Maidstone include Later… with Jools Holland<\/em>, Jools’ Annual Hootenanny<\/em> and Take Me Out<\/em>, as well as children’s favourites like Mister Maker<\/em> and Let’s Play<\/em> for CBeebies.<\/p>\nDavid Treywin, Technical Manager<\/em> for Maidstone Studios, says \u201cWe recently invested in a 12-fader Calrec Type R setup with sixteen channels of AES I\/O, as part of a number of upgrades to the Sound Gallery for our 12000sqft Studio 1.<\/p>\n\u201cThe Type R was chosen for the Grams position, and has so far been used for a range of Light Entertainment productions including Music and Game shows.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing able to recall custom soft panel layouts and surface configurations on a show-by-show basis saves rig time, and puts the functions the operators need easily at hand, whilst the ability to add additional hardware at a later date will allow us to easily tailor the facilities to meet any future needs.\u201d<\/p>\n
Treywin attributes Maidstone’s choice of the Calrec Type R to a combination of factors. This includes his own previous experience with Calrec desks, as well as the positive feedback received from several other audio professionals, when asked about their preferred brand of broadcast audio console.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve been familiar with the Calrec brand and their consoles for a number of years, having worked previously in a facility with a number of different Calrec desks – from the Calrec C and T series, through to the Apollo and Summa desks,\u201d Treywin continues.<\/p>\n

Calrec Type R \u2013 Modular, IP-based broadcast console<\/h2>\n

The Calrec Type R is a state-of-the-art, modular broadcast mixing system designed for radio, TV and outside broadcast production.<\/p>\n
Each Type R Core can host up to three independent mixing environments \u2013 with no sharing of DSP resources \u2013 allowing the creation of various system types that are tailored to operator needs.<\/p>\n
Remote control is provided via Calrec Assist, a browser-based interface that allows users to set up shows, memories, fader layouts, patching, bus setup, labelling, input and output levels, input channel parameters (including mic gains), routing and more without needing to be in front of the console.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nControl surfaces are offered via IP-based fader panels, small soft panels (SSPs) and large soft panels (LSPs), with a number of rack-mount I\/O boxes also available for additional analogue and AES, as well as the newly announced GPIO and Type R Talent Panel.<\/p>\n
