Monitor engineer <strong>Fabrice Lemuel<\/strong> knows this as well as anyone: as part of the audio team for UK girl-group <strong>FLO<\/strong>, every show is high-stakes, and nothing can be left to chance.<\/p>\n<p>Delivering great sound to the audience is only part of the job &#8211; performers and crew need the same clarity to do their best work. That\u2019s why the audio has to be reliable at every point in the production.<\/p>\n<p>We caught up backstage with <strong>Fabrice<\/strong> and Musical Director <strong>Producer Wez<\/strong> for FLO&#8217;s show at Somerset House in London, who were kind enough to give us a run-through of some of the audio equipment they use to bring FLO&#8217;s tour to life.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"RME MADIface XT II | Running Monitors for FLO at London's Somerset House\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hqJ0t5ZOtO0\" width=\"1840\" height=\"1035\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>A Musical Journey<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a church boy at heart, I love my gospel music,&#8221; Fabrice says during a break in soundcheck. &#8220;I fell in love with music at a very young age. Originally trying to play the bass guitar &#8211; my step Dad even took it upon himself to learn it as well, so he could teach me. I\u2019ve crossed paths with various music elements over time &#8211; as a DJ, and also as a primary school music teacher. He took my number, and six months to a year later I got a call from him inviting me down to the warehouse. Then he asked me if I wanted to go on tour, to which I said &#8216;yes&#8230;&#8217;. That way, you can give them all what they require, effectively and efficiently.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I love creating the journey,&#8221; he says of his favourite thing about his job. &#8220;From choosing the gear, building the infrastructure, and deciding with the artist and musical directors how the shows will go, including sonically from a Front Of House perspective. It\u2019s also simple to set up and record. My favourite thing is probably having the different types of MADI connections, which enables me to connect easily to most other setups I come across.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019m using it to record everything \u2013 comms, timecode, their ears mixes, and all the channels. So if anyone has an issue we can always go through it. When we come to doing soundcheck, afterwards I might make some adjustments. Sometimes I use virtual soundcheck with the girls to check their mixes, basically make sure everyone is happy and comfortable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m actually not using TotalMix FX a great deal, or to its fullest potential at least,&#8221; he says of RME&#8217;s software mixer, which runs on the DSP of RME interfaces. &#8220;But it has come in useful for re-routing TimeCode to different places in bigger setups. My main reason for using RME though is the reliability &#8211; the build quality of the products is really high. They&#8217;re extremely well-built.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Obviously like anything if you don\u2019t take care of it it\u2019ll get damaged. But otherwise they just don\u2019t break. And the sound is sonically the best sound you can get from an interface \u2013 AD conversion, DA conversion. Whatever you need, the RME kit is at the top of the line.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To finish off, we asked Fabrice whether he has any words of wisdom for other aspiring sound engineers. His advice?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBe before-time,&#8221; he says, &#8220;not on-time, because then you\u2019re late. Also be nice, be respectful, be reliable and stay consistent. And then learn your craft &#8211; learn the gear, study, always keep learning. His setup combines <strong>Ableton, AbleSet, DirectOut, Ferrofish, iConnectivity<\/strong> and a<strong> DiGiCo OrangeBox<\/strong>, designed for redundancy and complete control.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019m using Ableton with AbleSet, so I\u2019ve got the A and the B laptop, and AbleSet locks them both together,&#8221; Wez tells us.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The girls&#8217; music is very intricate, and the keys change a lot, so throughout the songs we have a lot of automation going. I\u2019m running timecode &#8211; that handles the lights and any video aspects that we\u2019ve got.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The shows run on a mixture of <a title=\"What is MADI? - A Guide to using MADI for recording (FAQ)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.synthax.co.uk\/latest\/what-is-madi-guide-tutorial-faq\/\">MADI<\/a> &#8211; a 64-channel, &#8216;point to point&#8217; method of digitally transmitting audio &#8211; and Dante, Audinate&#8217;s popular AoIP format.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I trigger all the tracks from the B laptop using AbleSet, and then we go into the (DirectOut) EXBOX,&#8221; continues Wez. &#8220;From the EXBOX we\u2019re out into the Ferrofish A32pro Dante. From there, we come out Dante into the DiGiCo OrangeBox.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-wrapper\">\n<p>As is standard for larger tours, Wez&#8217;s rig features an A and B setup, which allows for switching between a primary and backup rig if a fault occurs. This happens automatically via the DirectOut EXBOX.MD, a Dante and MADI switcher that&#8217;s perfect for live touring: if a fault does occur, the artist and crew never lose a show, and the switchover is so fast that the audience won&#8217;t even notice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also have the option of analogue outs as a backup,&#8221; Wez pointing to the Ferrofish A32pro Dante, a 32in\/32out converter with front panel metering, which connects to other devices via MADI or Dante. &#8220;Just to make sure we\u2019re totally covered no matter what happens. If we have any network issues, I\u2019ve got the analogues ready to go.
