Natural Surround Sound With Ultrasone S-Logic Technology

Ultrasone S-LogicIn this feature we’re taking a look at Ultrasone Headphones’ patented, award-winning S-Logic Natural Surround Sound technology. Exclusive to Ultrasone headphones, the sophisticated design of S-Logic provides the listener with a naturally enhanced and more immersive listening experience via its unique audio delivery system, without compromising the quality of the audio through artificial processing.

When you listen to music through an ordinary set of headphones, the drivers deliver the sound straight to the middle and inner ear, bypassing the outer ear. This results with the impression of the music being emitted from inside the wearer’s head! Although we won’t be getting into the biology of the human ear in this article, it’s worth noting that in order for us to accurately locate the direction and distance of the sounds we hear, we need the outer ear to be included for a proper three-dimensional listening experience. When listening to music through speakers, the audio is reflected off of our outer ears and directed towards our inner ears. Due to the nature of this process, the traditional headphone design will always result in an experience that is unnatural for the way in which our ears perceive sound in the real world.

Taking this phenomena into account, Ultrasone have designed their headphones in such a way that the full human ear is incorporated, with an ear cup design that has a decentralized driver instead. By positioning the driver away from the centre of the ear, the outputted sound is deliberately reflected off of the wearer’s outer ears first, sending the music around your head, rather than straight into your ears. The result is far more natural, with a deeper and wider sound that is a much closer approximation of listening to live music than a set of regular headphones.

An additional benefit of the S-Logic design is a reduced sound pressure level, by up to as much as 40%, resulting in a reduction of 3-4dB. What this means for the listener is the ability to listen to music at a reduced volume whilst retaining the same perceived loudness. Not only does this result in less listening-fatigue, allowing for longer, more comfortable listening sessions, but it also provides safer long-term usage and helps to prevent the damage that can be caused to our hearing by listening to headphones over long periods of time. Ultrasone specifically encourages users to follow safe listening practices, and to refrain from listening at loud volumes for extended periods, and its great to see a company looking for ways to provide safer listening through the design of its products.

With S-Logic, Ultrasone have designed a truly unique and distinguished method of improving the listening experience without altering the sound in an artificial way. Other headphone manufacturers use digital processing to create a sense of surround sound, but the downside of this method is that the audio will always be coloured by the process itself. Ultrasone’s patented S-Logic on the other hand manages to achieve this without altering the signal in any way, providing the listener with a far more natural, lifelike, wide and open soundstage that is closer to the experience of listening to a set of speakers, and really compliments any sounds you listen to, be it from music, films or gaming.
