BVE 2016 saw the first UK public showing of Fairlight 3DAW, the company’s innovative 3D audio platform, which gives the user full tactile control over the positioning of sounds in a three-dimensional space.

With 3DAW, you can add 3D audio production to your existing 2D audio workspace, allowing you mix 3D audio from your existing mixing console or DAW. Mono, stereo and surround sound signals can all be imported for mixing, mastering and manipulation within a 3D environment.

Alternatively, 3DAW can be configured as an all Fairlight turnkey solution, complete with a large format mixer coupled to a 1000 track recorder/dubber and 2K/4K video playback.

With 3D and immersive audio projects becoming increasingly popular, the software has been designed to meet the needs of TV, film and post-production engineers who work with a range of immersive audio formats.

Support for fixed-bus formats including 5.1 and 7.1, all the way up to NHK’s 22.2, and object-based formats such as Auro-3D, Dolby Atmos, DTS MDA, allow you to deliver the final project in whichever format you require.

The user definable B-chain processing allows you to switch instantly between different surround formats and different speaker sets, with speaker muting and soloing, and comprehensive metering.

In this video shot at BVE 2016, Fairlight’s Solution Architect Phil Reilly gives us a run-through of some of the capabilities of 3DAW and introduces us to the AirPan, which allows the user to perform virtual mixing with their hands in space. By reaching out and grabbing an audio object, you’re able to physically place the audio exactly where you want it, along with a host of other options such as rotating, tilting and controlling the stereo image.
