RME adds Windows plug and play compatibility to the Octamic XTC preamp and format converter

RME have announced a new firmware update for the Octamic XTC, the company’s “swiss army knife” microphone preamp, allowing for direct connection and usage with Windows based setups.

With RME’s own unique Class Compliant driver, Octamic XTC users can now take further advantage of the device’s unique set of features – microphone, line and instrument preamps, AD/DA conversion, digital patchbay and format conversion capabilities and even the ability to act as a flexible frontend for the Apple iPad®.

Analogue and digital routing, recording and playback

With eight microphone and line inputs, four switchable to Hi-Z mode, plus an unrivaled variety of digital connection protocols – from ADAT and AES/EBU to the sophisticated 64-channel MADI optical I/O – the Octamic XTC is an incredibly flexible device that's perfect for use in professional studio, live and broadcast applications.

A full color TFT display provides quickly accessible setup options. All analogue and digital inputs, including up to 64 MADI channels and 8 AES/EBU audio channels, can be freely patched to any output – including the 24 channels of the Class Compliant USB 2.0 audio interface format.

Plug and play with Windows, Mac or an iPad®

Whilst the Octamic XTC is not a true RME audio interface per se (TotalMix FX is not supported), this update allows you to record and play back audio directly to and from a Windows PC, and provides the same legendary stability and performance as RME’s other audio interfaces.

Up to 24 channels can be transferred in and out of the computer, and due to direct UAC2 support within Mac OSX, the unit can also be connected to any Mac without the need to install a driver. WDM and ASIO are controlled by a simple settings dialog, with options to control buffer size, sample rate, and the number and type of WDM devices.

Both the firmware and driver updates can be downloaded from RME’s website.
