Grand Cru Studios - London UKGrand Cru Songwriting-Writing Camp with Myles Clarke & RME

Grand Cru Studio is a 40 year old recording studio housed on a 110-year old Dutch barge. Originally converted into a studio by The Who’s Pete Townshend in the 70’s, the boat is currently moored in St.Katharine's Dock in Central London. Having opened its doors to the public several years ago, Grand Cru now operates as a commercial facility with recent clients including Fleur East (of X Factor fame), Mo (winner of The Voice) and electronic trio Years & Years.

In this video shot on location, resident engineer Myles Clarke (who's worked alongside The Who for the past 15 years) speaks to Synthax Audio UK about the history of the studio and the recent song-writing workshops they hosted, which included international artists Jodie Abacus (Ministry Of Sound), Alexander Oscar (Sony Denmark) and NOËP (Sony Sweden).

As a long-time RME Audio user, Synthax was also keen to get Myles’ view on RME’s audio interfaces. Having first come across RME via the now discontinued RME Fireface 400, Myles told us that RME continues to be his first port of call when setting up new projects, with his current setup including the RME Fireface UCX and Babyface Pro.

RME Fireface 802 - TotalMix FXRME TotalMix FX

All RME audio interfaces include an on-board digital mixer and signal router known as TotalMix FX, which in many instances removes the need for a mixing console. Controlled via a software GUI, each audio channel features an EQ and compression section, as well as M/S processing and phase invert, along with stereo reverb and delay effects sends.

Further functionality comes in the form of grouping faders for level control, soloing and muting, as well as enabling any of the I/O to be routed freely to one another with zero latency (via the 'Loopback' switch for each channel). In this way, different monitoring mixes can be created for musicians whilst recording the audio signal dry, removing the need for any external effects.
