Earlier in the year Dynaudio Acoustics announced the release of the MkII versions of their legendary M-series of passive studio monitors, a mainstay of iconic recording studios the world over for more than 30 years!
In his review for Sound On Sound, speaker specialist Phil Ward found plenty to love about the new version of the M-Series M1 near/midfields, a true high-end monitor designed for the most discerning of professional recording studios.
Phil writes: “The overwhelming characteristics of the M1 MkIIs for me are balance and integration. Its overall tonal balance is spot on, and bearing in mind the very limited scope in passive speaker engineering for finely targeted EQ, this speaks firstly of very high‑performance drivers and secondly of great skill in their integration and voicing.”
“The level of natural high‑frequency detail is extraordinary”
“The level of natural high‑frequency detail is extraordinary. With brushed cymbals, for example, it’s almost as if each strand of the brush is made audible. And this is achieved without any sense of unnatural high‑frequency emphasis.”
Passive for The Massive
Whilst active speakers no doubt dominate the modern recording space, Phil himself remains a fan of a high-precision, well-designed passive system – which is just as well, as that’s what the M-Series are all about. No EQ or DSP correction here – just very, very well-engineered speakers, designed by people who’ve been doing it for over 30 years!
“Back in 2020 I wrote a Why I Love column about passive speakers and the element of artistry that I feel is perhaps taken away from speaker design when almost limitless electronic and DSP resources are available. The M1 MkII is a perfect example of the kind of passive speaker I love. It’s full of skill and artistry, and it sounds really great as a result.”
Our thanks to Phil Ward and Sound On Sound.
