Resolution is the latest magazine to review the ADI-2 DAC, the sleek and powerful 2-channel headphone amplifier and USB-DAC from RME. Building on the success of the award-winning RME ADI-2 Pro, the ADI-2 DAC is a digital to analogue converter of the highest calibre, a perfect addition to high-end HiFi setups and offering audio professionals a lower-cost alternative to the ADI-2 Pro.

In his review for Resolution, Nigel Jopson continues the trend of magazine reviewers who’ve been highly impressed by RME’s flagship converter. “My ‘benchmark’ DAC — which I spent some time auditioning different units to choose — was revealed as completely wanting by the RME!” Nigel writes. “The sound quality of the ADI-2 DAC FS is superb. Even to my ‘industry veteran’ ears, and even at 44.1kHz 16 bit, the difference was obvious when compared to the other four DACs I had available. This is not just a DAC that’s ‘worth a try’ — if you’re looking for a benchmark two-channel with comprehensive monitoring controls — you have to audition this.”

    RME ADI-2 DAC - Front-Back-Angle - Synthax Audio UKRME ADI-2 DAC – A new reference in sound

Boasting a feature set that will excite both HiFi enthusiasts and audio professionals, the ADI-2 DAC is a true reference-class converter with an incredible level of flexibility. All outputs can be adjusted to suit any pair of headphones or speakers via the independent 5-band parametric EQs found on each channel. Each outputs EQ settings can then be saved to one of the ADI-2 DAC’s onboard memory slots for easy recall.

You’ll also find bass and treble switches along with a ‘Loud’ mode – legacy features with a nod to traditional HiFi setups. These are also user-adjustable, so you’ll be able to quickly add the perfect amount of bass boost to a dance track, or instantly dial up the treble on an old jazz record.

Other unique features include the automatic recognition of headphone impedance, ensuring you’ll always have enough volume regardless of your choice of cans, along with automatic volume reduction to prevent against accidental damage to your headphones (or ears!). RME even added a unique feature called ‘AutoDark’, for switching off all lights on the device when you want to enjoy music in total darkness.

Then there’s the more advanced features like adjustable crossfeed; a choice of 5 different anti-aliasing filters; plus DSD playback and sample rates up to 768 kHz. The ADI-2 DAC is also class compliant / plug ‘n’ play with Windows, Mac and iOS devices.

    “if you’re looking for a benchmark two-channel
with comprehensive monitoring controls — you have to audition this.”

A first for an RME device, the ADI-2 DAC also features a remote control, which can be customised to provide quick control over your most commonly used features. Along with volume, input selection and power on/off, the remote features four user-definable buttons, with a total of 21 different parameters available for customising the remote to your liking.

Since its release, the RME ADI-2 DAC has received strong praise from both magazines and users, with Sound On Sound writing that they’re “very impressed with all that it can do, and the ease and quality with which it does it!”, and Headfonics going as far as to say they “can’t think of any other desktop DAC/amp combo that would be easier to recommend in 2018.”

  2. RME Updates: New firmware available for the ADI-2 Pro FS and ADI-2 DAC

Comments Off on RME Updates: New firmware available for the ADI-2 Pro FS and ADI-2 DAC

RME ADI-2 Pro & DAC - Firmware Update - Synthax Audio UK

New firmware updates for the ADI-2 Pro and DAC converters brings improved compatibility to Windows 10 and standalone media players.

    (Scroll down for download links)

RME has released the latest firmware updates for the ADI-2 Pro and ADI-2 DAC. These updates bring improvements to both the user experience and the technical performance of both devices, including addressing an issue where the ADI-2 Pro / ADI-2 DAC couldn’t be set as the default playback device in Windows 10.

As a result, Windows 10 now fully accepts the ADI-2 Pro and DAC as 2 channel recording and playback devices, with support for PCM sample rates up to 384 kHz, and DSD up to DSD256. It’s therefore no longer necessary for Windows users to install a driver, unless you want to use the ASIO driver (e.g. for automatic sample rate switching) and RME’s DIGICheck software.

This also means that high-definition music playback software such as Roon can be used for listening to HD audio files on Windows.

RME’s Head of Design Matthias Carstens explains, “[DSD256 playback] has been tested with various software, among them Roon. While Roon supports ASIO it can also use Wasapi to change the sample rate automatically based on the sample rate of the currently played file. This also works when changing to DSD (set to ‘DSD via DoP’), everything automatically within a mixed PCM/DSD playlist. And although Windows audio is limited to 384 kHz, DSD256 playback worked perfectly – which switches the ADI to 705.6/768 kHz sample rate.”

On the technical side, the ‘ripple’ produced by the ADI-2 Pro’s analogue to digital conversion has also been reduced. Whilst this ripple is completely inaudible, RME ADI-2 devices are regularly being employed for measurement applications, and as such this modification will help improve the readbility of high-resolution audio test results.

You can read more about these improvements on the RME forum.

  5. RME ADI-2 DAC & Headphone Amp Review By Headfonics

Comments Off on RME ADI-2 DAC & Headphone Amp Review By Headfonics

RME ADI-2 DAC review by HeadfonicsThe RME ADI-2 DAC receives a review from American Hi-Fi specialists Headfonics. Click here to read the full review.

Back in 2016 RME made a big splash with the release of the ADI-2 Pro, a new flagship AD/DA converter and headphone amplifier featuring the pro audio manufacturer's most accurate audio conversion to date. The brainchild of RME’s Head of Design Matthias Carstens, who personally oversaw every step of the design process, the ADI-2 Pro was the result of one man's mission to create the ultimate headphone amplifier and USB-DAC.

Since its release the ADI-2 Pro has become a popular choice for mixing and mastering applications, with incredibly detailed and transparent sonics, plus a host of useful features such as onboard EQ, spectral analyser, recording and playback up to 768 kHz, and of course the two "Extreme Power" headphone outputs, that have enough juice to power even the most high-impedence set of cans.

"I can’t think of any other desktop DAC/amp combo
that would be easier to recommend in 2018."

The combination of sonic clarity and state of the art features also drew the attention of the HiFi community. Of course, the needs of HiFi users and professional engineers differ slightly, and so with a nod to the HiFi community, RME and Matthias revealed a new version of the ADI-2 Pro in 2018 called the RME ADI-2 DAC.

Doing away with the analogue to digital capabilities, the RME ADI-2 DAC has been redesigned as the perfect addition to high-end home setups, as well as offering a lower-cost alternative front-end for engineers and music producers who work primarily 'in-the-box'.

"The ADI-2 DAC is technically marvellous, regardless of whether
you want to dive into the long feature list or not."

Stylised in an all-black housing, the RME ADI-2 DAC features a new dedicated IEM connection allowing for the direct connection of in-ear headphones without the need for an adapter. A customisable, user-definable remote control is also included (a first for an RME device), and the new 'lights-out' mode turns off all lights on the unit – perfect for a home cinema setup, or for listening to music in total darkness. The clock has also been improved (down to the femtosecond, hence the 'FS' on the front panel), an advancement which has also been included on the latest version of the RME ADI-2 Pro.

RME ADI-2 DAC - Synthax Audio UK

The RME ADI-2 DAC features a new dedicated output for IEM's, along with the new Femtosecond clocking.
Other new features include the 'lights out' mode, and a remote control.

One of the first reviews of the ADI-2 Pro was courtesy of headphone specialist website Headfonics, who called the device “a game changer”, and now the ADI-2 DAC has also received a similarly glowing review. Covering every aspect of the ADI-2 DAC from the sound quality to extensive feature set, Headfonics have produced a fittingly detailed analysis, concluding that “This is an extremely down-to-earth device that has just been given extreme thought, massive experience and great attention to detail. The ADI-2 DAC is technically marvellous, regardless of whether you want to dive into the long feature list or not. I do recommend you do, though, because the equalizer with its many save slots, the customizable loudness function, the tight crossfeed, various DA filters and many controls to test your whole audio chain just keep on giving and giving."

  8. RME ADI-2 Pro & Anniversary Edition – New Firmware Update – Version 144 DSP 81

Comments Off on RME ADI-2 Pro & Anniversary Edition – New Firmware Update – Version 144 DSP 81

RME ADI-2 Pro UpdatesRME have released a new firmware update for the ADI-2 Pro and AE (Anniversary Edition), allowing for automatic sample rate changes when switching between playback via USB and SPDIF.

The RME ADI-2 Pro has quickly becoming a firm favourite with both professional audio engineers and Hi-Fi users, who are looking for the highest quality of audio conversion. And as is typical of RME, they’ve just released a new firmware update in response to a request made by Hi-Fi users in particular, who wanted to be able to switch freely between USB and SPDIF at different sample rates (no small task!). This is of course the second update in a the last few months, as RME continues its tradition of listening and responding to customer requests, with new features and tweaks being added on an ongoing basis.

As Matthias Carstens (head designer at RME) explains in the forum post, “[the HiFi guys] expected to be able to just switch the input from USB to SPDIF and back. As we all know this is usually not possible. The interface (AD/DA, digital I/Os, FPGA, DSP) runs with a common clock, and getting SPDIF from a CD-player needs the interface to change to the clock of said player. Now if you just played back files via USB at 192 kHz, changing the hardware to 44.1 would wreak havoc on whatever operating system you use, as fully unexpectedly either the hardware is removed, or put into a state that the OS’ audio engine can not handle.”

“One often found solution is to use a sample rate converter for the incoming SPDIF signal, so the interface can stay at the current USB sample rate, and one can still listen to the SPDIF signal. Unfortunately the first thing a ‘HiFi guy’ does is to disable said SRC. Oops! But even if not, the SRC will fail when USB is used with higher than 192 kHz, as the SRC in the ADI-2 Pro is limited to these 192 kHz.”

So if you’re an owner of the RME ADI-2 Pro or the ADI-2 Pro AE, you’ll want to take immediately take advantage of this latest update. And if you’re not yet an ADI-2 Pro user but you’re interested in finding out more, you can check out the reviews from Sound On Sound and Headfonics, both of whom we’re pleased to report had plenty of nice things to say about this feature-laden headphone amp and USB-DAC!

    We also spotted this great quote on the Gearslutz mastering forum from an ADI-2 Pro user named Jochen, who’s kindly allowed us to repost his words here;
“I’m using the ADI-2 Pro for several months now and I really think it’s one of the biggest bargains in audio today. The conversion quality is stellar and it has more options than most of the much more expensive units. The headphone output also sounds better (for my taste) than everything I owned before (SPL Phonitor, Neve RNHP,…). I don’t often rave about gear, but it’s well deserved.”

You can read more about the full changes made via the firmware update from Matthias Carsten’s post on the RME forum here.

The firmware update itself can be downloaded from the RME ADI-2 Pro page on the RME website here.
