YouTuber Podcastage takes a look at Lauten’s LA-220 Series Black condenser microphone for vocals and guitar

Podcastage is back with another Lauten review, this time checking out Lauten’s entry-level FET condenser, the LA-220 from the Series Black range.

Having previously reviewed the Lauten LS-208 Synergy Series front-address mic for his channel, this time Podcastage puts the cheapest mic in Lauten’s catalogue through its paces on vocals, spoken word, and electric and acoustic guitars.

Lauten Audio LA-220 – “a unique sound”

At a time when more people are looking to improve their home recording setup, we were pleased to hear Podcastage agreed with other reviews that the LA-220 has a particularly strength for vocal and spoken word applications, especially when a lift is needed in the lower frequencies to add some weight and power to a voice.

“For spoken word I think the mic has some really nice articulation in the upper frequencies,” Podcastage says. “Although it does border on being a little bit sibilant (editor’s note – try it with the built-in 12kHz high-cut filter!), at the same time it somehow avoids any mid-frequency honkiness, which a lot of microphones in the sub-$300 dollar range have.”

“And also in the lower frequencies for spoken word it has some really nice depth and weight to it, so if you’re looking for that ‘overly-bassy and boomy voice of God’, I think this microphone could work well for that sound.”

“When I compared it against a bunch of other microphones, the LA-220 has a unique sound that none of the other microphones offer.”

Lauten Audio Eden Micropgone & AccessoriesLauten Audio – Premium Studio Microphones

Lauten Audio is a California-based manufacturer of high-end studio mics. The premium Signature Series features a range of microphones designed for high-end studio production, including the flagship Eden LT-386 (pictured), a mic that’s been described as both a ‘desert-island mic’ and a ‘classic of the future’.

Regular features in the Signature Series include built-in high and low-cut filters, as well as Lauten’s unique ‘voicing’ feature, offering multiple tonal options for getting the recording right first time at source. This isn’t simply an applied EQ either – each voice has its own dedicated circuitry and signal path, essentially offering ‘3 mics in 1’.

For the more budget-conscious producers and recording engineers, Lauten’s Series Black microphones offer a more affordable entry to the world of Lauten microphones.

The LA-120, LA-220 and LA-320 offer three different flavours – an SDC pair, a FET condenser and an LDC tube-mic respectively – and maintain the same high-quality build and unique sonic performance to that of Lauten’s more expensive offerings.

Like the Signature Series, the Series Black mics feature adjustable high and low-cut features, to help you get that perfect sound capture at the start of your recording chain.
