RME Digiface Dante - Review - Pro Tools Expert - Synthax Audio UKRME Audio’s 258-channel AoIP interface (Dante / MADI) gets a write-up from Pro Tools Expert.

The RME Digiface Dante is a lightweight and portable 258-channel audio interface, combining the power of Audinate’s popular AoIP format with the industry-renowned reliability of RME drivers, and the flexibility offered by RME’s TotalMix software.

Featuring 128 (64 I/O) channels of Dante and 128 (64 I/O) channels of MADI (also switchable to Wordclock), the Digiface Dante provides Mac and Windows users with a huge number of channels via a single USB 3.0 connection.

An on-board headphone output provides direct monitoring straight from the device itself*, and with the added ability to run the unit standalone, the Digiface Dante can also be employed as a dedicated MADI <> Dante format converter (including monitoring when preconfigured via TotalMix FX).

*Can also be used as an unbalanced line output, for connecting studio monitors with a Y-cable.

Music production website Pro Tools Expert recently put the interface on test as part of a studio setup (alongside the Ferrofish Pulse 16 DX converter – reviewed separately here), making particular note of the high-channel count and RME’s reputation for “rock-solid drivers”.

“RME’s in-house coded drivers are amongst the best in the business and put many other companies to shame,” writes reviewer James Richmond, who goes on to describe the round-trip latency figures as “exceptionally good”.

“an RME Digiface Dante and some Dante enabled mic preamps
would be a very portable but powerful set up”

Comparing the Digiface Dante favourably with the Digiface AVB, another no-fuss interface from RME designed specifically for audio networking, James concludes that “the size of this device belies its capabilities. If you are already invested in Dante and wanted to add another machine, such as a laptop, to your network where you tracked high channel counts then it is probably the best product currently available.”

RME Audio - Core Value - Synthax Audio UKRME Digiface Dante – Network switch and advanced Dante control

The RME Digiface Dante is a USB 3.0, bus-powered interface designed to provide instant access to Dante networking, as well as providing a simple method for bringing MADI devices on to a Dante network.

Equipped with 4 x Gigabit ethernet ports (with 100 Mbit/s compatibility), the Digiface Dante also offers the functionality of a network switch, for connecting up to 4 network lines, or providing redundant operation.

Like all recent RME interfaces, the Digiface Dante also includes RME’s TotalMix FX software, providing you with full control over all incoming and outgoing audio channels.

Summing, routing and mixing can all be managed via TotalMix FX, with highly accurate metering for all audio on the network. It’s like having an enhanced Dante Controller with the addition of metering and faders, which can be operated via Mac, PC or even wirelessly with an iPad (when used with RME’s TotalMix Remote software).
