RME 12Mic - Perspective - Synthax Audio UKCrystal Clear Microphone Preamps

For more than a decade, RME’s microphone preamps have been relied upon by engineers across live, studio and broadcast audio. The transparent audio reproduction achieved by preamps like the Octamic and Micstasy has made RME preamps an incredibly popular choice for classical and orchestral recording sessions, where pristine audio quality is paramount.

The 12Mic improves on the reference-class conversion offered by its predecessors, packing exceptional sound quality and performance into a 1U unit.

The PAD-free microphone input stages have a 75 dB gain range and accept signals of up to +18 dBu. On the converter side, the 12Mic shines with an outstanding signal-to-noise ratio on all channels.

All twelve front-facing XLR connections accept microphone and line-level signals, whilst the first four connections also accept TRS connectors, with switchable high impedance (Hi-Z) for instruments.

AVB Audio Networking

Part of their network audio product line designed for the next decade, RME’s AVB devices can be discovered and controlled by any AVB controller. The deterministic nature of AVB means that any signal on the network is streamed with fixed latency and guaranteed bandwidth, with no switch configuration required.

12Mic implements the IEEE standards for audio streaming, discovery and control, and includes support for the standards set out by Avnu Alliance’s ‘Milan’ (Media-integrated local area network) ensuring smooth operation across AVB devices from different manufacturers.

RME 12Mic - Connections - Synthax Audio UKExtensive I/O

Alongside its impressive technical specification, the 12Mic’s impressive I/O options allow the 12Mic to be easily integrated into any setup.

Its two EtherCon network ports offer redundant AVB operation, whilst coaxial connections are available for both MADI and Wordclock. Three ADAT outputs and a USB connection for firmware updates and remote control round out the back panel I/O options.

The 12Mic’s three ADAT outputs can send 24 channels at 44.1/48 kHz. This means a combination of sources, like microphone inputs and MADI or AVB signals, can all be sent via ADAT. Additionally, all 12 microphone inputs can also be sent via ADAT at 96 kHz sample rate.

The coaxial MADI I/O makes it possible to send all 12 analogue inputs of the 12Mic at 192 kHz, plus the addition of an optional MADI SFP module brings MADI redundancy to the 12Mic’s already impressive feature set.

The dual ethernet ports are also capable of full redundancy, with the ability to send 128 channels in both directions over an AVB network.

Comprehensive Control Options

The 12Mic’s front panel has been designed and optimised for both speed and usability. A TFT display provides accurate level metering, with a colour sequence of green, yellow, amber and red for checking levels at a glance.

All controls and device states can be operated directly from the front panel, making the 12Mic fully configurable via a menu system that is both straightforward to use, and easy to navigate.

When paired with an RME Digiface AVB, the 12Mic can also be controlled using RME’s AVB controller, as well as third-party AVDECC controllers such as Hive.

The network-ready 12Mic also features many options when it comes to remote control. RME’s brand new browser-based Web Remote can be accessed from any location on a network, providing a simple click-and-drag functionality form input to output.

SteadyClock FS

The RME 12Mic also features RME’s SteadyClock FS, the latest iteration of the company’s incredibly accurate digital clocking and filtering technology, that supresses jitter values down to the femtosecond.

Clocking forms an integral part of digital audio, with the clocking frequency responsible for accurate representation of audio bits and sample time reference. SteadyClock FS ensures clocking accuracy down to a femtosecond, reproducing sound that replicates the source material to its fullest depth and clarity.
