RME ADI-2 DAC FS - UK Audio Show 2021 - Synthax Audio UKBig thanks to everyone who stopped by the RME / Synthax Audio UK stand at the UK Audio Show 2021.

The Covid-19 pandemic essentially put a halt to trade shows over the past 18 months, so it was a pleasure to once again be out meeting and mingling with so many like-minded people.

Hosted at the De Vere Staverton Estate in Northants, the UK Audio Show 2021 was the perfect opportunity for us to showcase our RME ADI-2 DAC FS, alongside its AD/DA sibling the ADI-2 Pro FS R.

Whilst the RME Audio name is synonymous with pro audio applications, both the ADI-2 DAC FS and Pro FS R have proved extremely popular with audiophiles running high-end home audio systems – due to a combination of ‘reference-class’ sonics, versatile DSP functionality, excellent on-board headphone amplifiers, and a user-definable remote control.

    RME ADI-2 DAC FS

Described as “the DAC to beat for under £1000“, the RME ADI-2 DAC FS is our ‘DAC-du-jour’, instantly becoming a Hi-Fi classic since its launch a few years back.

Sonically revealing and transparent, the ADI-2 DAC excels in its communication of microdynamics, exposing the many subtleties of a great recording or musical performance (and exposing the flaws of the not so great!).

Of course, this is not just a DAC – it’s also a headphone amplifier (with dedicated connections for larger 6.3mm connectors, and IEMs with 3.5mm connectors), as well as a DSP FX-laden box of tricks, with on-board EQ, Loudness, adjustable Bass and Treble controls, and features like Crossfeed, different filter types, Mono, Phase and Polarity switching, Mid-Side and more.

The ADI-2 DAC can also be employed as a preamp when connected to larger sound systems – feeding larger amplifiers with beautiful high-end sound – and includes a user-definable remote control (volume, EQ, input selection (USB / SPDIF), L-R balance etc) and support for the popular Logitech Harmony.

    RME ADI-2 Pro FS R

Whilst the ADI-2 DAC FS remains the more popular choice for home audio, RME’s 2-channel ADC/DAC – the ADI-2 Pro FS R – offers a couple of different features that make it an interesting alternative.

Primarily designed for high-end recording and mastering, the Pro model features the same exquisite DA section as the DAC whilst adding equally impressive 2-channel recording functionality.

Alongside the obvious studio applications – capturing mixing consoles, vintage gear and other studio outboard in incredible detail – the AD section can also be put to use for more general purpose applications, such as the archiving and converting of analogue source material (e.g. vinyl) to digital in extremely high-quality (up to 768kHz PCM / DSD256).

The two front-panel 6.3mm headphone outputs can also be level-matched, making it a great option for anyone with a large headphone collection to compare each set side by side. Alternatively, both outputs can be employed simultaneously for use with balanced headphones.

All of the other many features found on the DAC are also found on the Pro, including the front-panel spectral analyser and level metering (for inputs and outputs), automatic headphone detection and input switching, ‘Dark Mode’, bit testing, and access to DIGICheck (RME’s software suite of audio analysis tools).

RME ADI-2 Pro FS R - Perspective - Synthax Audio UKRME ADI-2 Pro FS R – Reference Class Conversion, in the studio and at home.

A reference-class AD/DA Converter, USB DAC and headphone amplifier rolled into one half-rack unit, the RME ADI-2 Pro FS R is the flagship converter in the ADI-2 series.

Designed with both hi-fi enthusiasts and studio engineers in mind, the ADI-2 Pro FS R aims to deliver absolute reference sound, delivering RME’s renowned crystal-clear sound signature.

With two “Extreme Power” Headphone outputs, the ADI-2 Pro FS R is perfect for audiophiles who have several pairs of headphones, offering the ability to compare different pairs. The ADI-2 also features a “Balanced Mode”, allowing both outputs to operate as one. This delivers a balanced signal path from the DAC straight to the phone, with 3 dB gain in Signal to Noise Ratio, smoothed out deviations in components, optimized frequency response, super low output impedance (0.2 Ohms), and a maximum output level of +28dBu.

The ADI-2 Pro FS R comes packed with RME’s new Multi Remote Control, offering access to frequently used setting when away from the unit. With seven customisable buttons, the Multi Remote Control is as flexible as it is functional, with 52 assignable commands available.

RME ADI-2 DAC FS - Perspective - Synthax Audio UKRME ADI-2 DAC FS – Extreme Power Headphone Amp & Reference-Class USB-DAC

Built on the technology, concept and features of the ADI-2 Pro, the RME ADI-2 DAC FS concentrates on delivering DA conversion in the highest quality. Focussing on the needs of the Hi-Fi enthusiast and home listener, the ADI-2 DAC retains the foundations of the ADI-2 Pro Series whilst offering I/O options better suited to Hi-Fi. With connections for coaxial and optical SPDIF and ADAT, unbalanced RCA and balanced XLR, the DAC has an output option for every system.

Another evolution of the DAC is its secondary headphone output, which is purpose-built for 3.5mm in-ear monitors. Designed to project the full dynamic range to even the most sensitive in-ears, the IEM output features a noise-floor even lower than the “Extreme Power” output. The ADI-2 DAC’s headphone outputs also feature a ramp-up feature, which slowly increases the volume when headphones are detected, saving expensive listening equipment and sensitive ears in the process.

With reference-quality conversion, a plethora of additional features and “extreme power” headphone outputs built into an attractive half rack unit, the ADI-2 DAC FS is the perfect centre-piece for hi-fi enthusiasts, bringing studio-quality sound into the home.

  • RME ADI-2 Pro FS R (Black Edition) – Review by TechReflex

Comments Off on RME ADI-2 Pro FS R (Black Edition) – Review by TechReflex

The RME ADI-2 Pro FS R gets an in-depth review from YouTuber TechReflex

Anyone with an interest in recording and mixing will no doubt be familiar with RME Audio. Now into its 25th year, the German manufacturer specialises in the design of professional multi-channel audio devices used throughout the recording studio, live audio, film sound and broadcast audio production markets, with a product range that spans audio interfaces and sound cards, microphone preamps, audio networking devices, and AD/DA and format converters.

RME’s ADI-2 Series therefore presents something of an unusual entry into the company’s catalogue. A set of high-performance audio devices designed for applications requiring the utmost in audio precision, both the ADI-2 Pro DAC FS and ADI-2 Pro FS R have proven equally popular for use in high-end domestic audio setups, striking a chord with Hi-Fi enthusiasts due to the combination of exceptional sound quality, powerful on-board headphone amplifiers, and a myriad of useful built-in DSP features.

As such, the ADI-2 DAC and Pro FS R have seen their fair share of reviews from YouTube channels with a more tech-based slant, such as this latest video from YouTuber TechFlex, whose focus includes computer builds and gaming tech alongside speakers and headphones.

At 25 minutes long this is a well-rounded and an in-depth look at the RME ADI-2 Pro FS R Black Edition, so many thanks to TechReflex for taking the time to provide so much detail!

RME ADI-2 DAC FS and Pro FS R Blacked Edition

Multiple Headphone outputs & Balanced Mode

Whilst the ADI-2 DAC FS remains the most popular RME device for Hi-Fi, TechReflex suggests that Hi-Fi users should also be considering the Pro, noting that the device “offers many features that make it a worthy consideration for anyone looking to buy an ADI-2 DAC.”

“Six months ago I said that the RME ADI-2 DAC FS was one of the best audio products ever made, and while I thought that that was the ‘end-game’ DAC and amp for me, it turns out that the [RME ADI-2 Pro is] something that I actually have a very good use-case for.”

Whilst the DAC FS provides an abundance of useful features, the Pro FS R model has a few extras that may be of interest to those with a headphone collection – with the device housing two dedicated DAC chips, the Pro is able to simultaneously output different levels for two sets of headphones (or one set of headphones and a set of speakers, or even a pair of speakers and a subwoofer).

“Each of the headphone outs on the ADI-2 Pro offer 1.5w of power per channel at 32 ohms, so even individually these are really powerful headphone amplifiers that will drive most headphones on the market to ear damaging levels,” says TechReflex.

“And it’s not just about the power – the specs on these headphone outs are also insane, and they provide very clean and distortion-free power to provide a very high-quality and uncoloured signal to your headphones. So even for audiophiles, these headphones amps are really great.”

“You can also connect two headphones to this together, and control their volume individually, which wasn’t possible with the ADI-2 DAC as it only has one chip. So this was one of the main reasons I bought this for, because as a headphone reviewer, I can compare the sound quality of two headphones.”

RME ADI-2 Pro FS Black Edition - Synthax Audio UK

“The ADI-2 Pro uses a very advanced balanced out mode, which uses both of its DAC chips individually for left and right channels,” continues TechReflex.

“This means that the whole signal path, from DAC to the headphone driver is balanced, and that the signal inversion happens within the digital domain. Keep in mind that many of the ‘balanced’ headphone amplifiers that you’ll see are not actually balanced internally, and they just use the balanced out connection for more power.”

“They may also not have individual headphone amplifiers for left and right like the ADI-2 Pro… I really don’t know of any other device that uses this kind of advanced balanced setup.”

  • “Hopefully, they’ll forget they’ve lent it to me” – RME ADI-2 FS Review by Pro Tools Expert

Comments Off on “Hopefully, they’ll forget they’ve lent it to me” – RME ADI-2 FS Review by Pro Tools Expert

RME ADI-2 FS - Review - Pro Tools Expert - Synthax Audio UKPro Tools Expert reviews the RME ADI-2 FS (Mastering AD/DA Converter).

Click here to read the full review

RME’s range of professional multi-channel audio interfaces already strike an excellent balance between cost and performance, with pristine sound quality* for recording and playback combining with powerful features like TotalMix FX, extensive connectivity options, and the ‘rock-solid’ reliability demanded by working audio professionals.

    * Check out the sonic state review for an excellent discussion on RME’s sonic qualities

For the majority of users, an RME interface – such as the Babyface Pro FS, Fireface UFX+, or the new Fireface UCX II – will more than suffice. That being said, there are a few select applications that particularly benefit from a higher level of AD and DA conversion.

“I can confirm that the build quality of the ADI-2 FS unit I received lives up to RME’s reputation.”

Mastering of course springs to mind, where top-shelf AD/DAs tend to be par for the course. Indeed, mastering houses will often have a selection of high-end AD/DAs to choose from, to provide different ‘flavours’ depending on the project or style of music.

The RME ADI-2 Series is range of high-end AD and DA converters designed to meet this requirement, offering the best sound quality currently available from the German pro audio manufacturer. All three models that make up the current ADI-2 range – the ADI-2 FS, ADI-2 DAC FS and ADI-2 Pro FS R – feature exceptional sound quality, with more than one observer noting that the sound rivals that of far more expensive devices.

“Used as my stereo monitoring DA, I loved the sound of the RME”

The stripped-back ADI-2 FS in particular offers an especially affordable entry into the world of high-end audio conversion. This point was noted by mastering engineer Mike Thorne in his review for Production Expert, who refers to the device as “RME’s very reasonably priced AD/DA”.

Comparing the sound of the ADI-2 FS with his Avid / Burl / SSL AWS 900+ based setup, Mike concludes that “for mastering? I loved the RME. It was genuinely useful to have a different flavour of AD, in addition to the Burl and the quality is very good. Hopefully, they’ll forget they’ve lent it to me. Although probably not!”

Upgrading your existing interface with high-end AD/DA conversion

Of course, it’s not only mastering engineers who’ll benefit from having a high-end AD/DA solution. For recording engineers and music producers, upgrading your existing setup with a top-end AD/DA allows you to get the best out of your studio monitors and headphones. The ADI-2 FS offers exactly this in a relatively affordable package, not to mention the benefits of using RME’s SteadyClock FS technology for enhanced digital clocking.

  • “I can’t recommend it highly enough” – RME HDSPe AIO Pro review by Sound On Sound

Comments Off on “I can’t recommend it highly enough” – RME HDSPe AIO Pro review by Sound On Sound RME HDSPe AIO Pro - Sound On Sound Review - Synthax Audio UK

Sound On Sound reviews the HDSPe AIO Pro, RME’s high-performance 30-Channel PCIe Sound Card.

Update, December 2021: We are delighted to announce that the RME HDSPe AIO Pro has won a Sound on Sound Gear of the Year Award!

The RME HDSPe AIO Pro is the latest and greatest PCIe sound card from RME, combining 30 channels of analogue and digital I/O with RME’s highly coveted ADI-2 Series converters.

Add in RME’s TotalMix software mixing controller and DIGICheck analysis tools; network control with TotalMix Remote; the latest digital clocking courtesy of SteadyClock FS; and incredible low-latency performance, the HDSPe AIO Pro sets a new standard for professional multi-channel sound cards.

This first major review comes from Sound On Sound, with reviewer Hugh Robjohns comparing the AIO Pro’s bench-test performance alongside a selection of equally high-end converters also known for exceptional sound.

“The new AIO‑Pro card uses the same high‑end converter chips — AKM’s ‘Velvet Sound’ AK5572 A‑D and AK4490 D‑A — that delivered a stellar performance in the ADI‑2 Pro interface (reviewed back in April 2017)” Hugh writes.

“…The AIO‑Pro sits just inside my top 10 rankings, with the D‑A side performing on a par with Crookwood’s mastering converters, the Mytek Brooklyn DAC+ and Focusrite’s RedNet, but slightly below the Grace M905 and RME’s ADI‑2 DAC.”

“The AIO‑Pro represents the current state of the art. It delivers a superb technical performance
via its analogue I/O, rivalling many high‑end outboard converters”

“The AIO‑Pro is a very welcome and most impressive update to RME’s HDSPe range, and I can’t recommend it highly enough,” Hugh concludes, who was so impressed he decided not to let us have it back… “Sadly for RME, I’ve lost my screwdriver and so am unable to remove the review card from my studio PC. Really sorry about that…”

Massive thanks to Hugh and everyone at SOS!

RME HDSPe AIO Pro - PCIe Sound Card - Synthax Audio UK

An RME ADI-2 DAC FS in a PCIe Card?

A high-end sound card with mastering-grade conversion quality, the AIO Pro is currently the only product available from RME that combines the flexibility of TotalMix with the award-winning conversion of the ADI-2 Series into a single package.

SteadyClock FS provides next-generation digital clocking across all inputs and outputs (including operating as clock master), whilst latency figures are at an all-time low, with independent website DAW Bench ranking it as their new benchmark for low-latency audio cards in 2021.

A selection of analogue and digital I/O provide a range of connectivity options (ADAT, SPDIF and AES-3), and the on-board ‘High Power² headphone output’ offers excellent technical performance for all types of headphones, providing an extremely high-quality headphone output directly from the computer (complete with mute relays to prevent against ‘pops’ and ‘clicks’ during computer shutdown).

For a full overview of the HDSPe AIO Pro’s technical specifications, visit the RME HDSPe AIO Pro product page.

“On the A‑D side, the AIO‑Pro nestles between the Apogee Symphony
    and Grace Design M108.
I’d say that’s pretty impressive for a £550 multichannel interface!”

  • How to upgrade your audio interface with a high-end AD/DA converter (RME ADI-2 FS)

Comments Off on How to upgrade your audio interface with a high-end AD/DA converter (RME ADI-2 FS)

An introduction to adding a dedicated, mastering-grade AD/DA converter to any audio interface for high-end recording and monitoring.

There’s no doubt that as musicians and engineers we really are spoilt for choice these days. From low-cost computer soundcards and ‘entry-level’ audio interfaces (primarily built from mass market, off-the-shelf components and circuitry), to the more mid-range and upper-end devices favoured by audio professionals, the number of devices available (and at pretty much any price-point) is really quite staggering.

The beginner and entry-level offerings may well be all you need to get started out in recording and production, and there’s no question that many great albums have been recorded on a low budget. As your needs grow however, you’ll likely find yourself wondering what some of the more expensive devices can bring to the table, perhaps even taking a gander at what’s commonly known as ‘high-end’.

One set of devices that fall into this bracket is RME’s ADI-2 Series of converters, which feature exceptionally detailed sound, and have been designed from the ground-up to cater for the most critical listening and recording applications. The popularity of the ADI-2 DAC FS and Pro FS R are well-documented, however there’s also a more budget-conscious offering in this range from RME that you may have overlooked – the RME ADI-2 FS, a standalone AD/DA converter and headphone amplifier developed as a low-cost alternative.

Featuring the same award-winning converters as its siblings in a simplified, stripped-back package, the ADI-2 FS is designed for high-end recording and monitoring applications that require exquisite, highly detailed audio conversion in both directions, but without the need for any of the many DSP-based extras found on the DAC and Pro models.

In this video tutorial, we’ve provided a run-through of the easiest way to connect the ADI-2 FS with any ADAT or SPDIF-supported audio interface, upgrading the sound with top of the range AD/DA conversion, as well as the next-generation digital clocking offered by RME’s SteadyClock FS.

We’ve used the 36-channel RME Fireface UCX for our example, however any interface that features an ADAT, SPDIF or AES/EBU connection can connect with the ADI-2 FS.

RME announces TotalMix FX 1.50 - Synthax Audio UKRME Audio Interfaces

For most professional audio engineers, RME’s line of premium audio interfaces provide everything you need from a single unit – with high quality on-board microphone preamps and AD/DA sections, excellent build quality and extensive routing capabilities, plus further options for high channel counts and additional connectivity options – and here at Synthax UK, we believe they strike a perfect balance between quality and performance.

For the majority of professional recording applications, the sound quality offered by an RME interface will more than suffice – whether that’s for studio or live recording, TV and broadcast production, location sound recording or post-production, or for any of other markets we regularly supply into (education, automotive and manufacturing, scientific applications etc).

That being said, there are some situations that lend themselves to using the absolute highest quality available – specialist audio applications such as mastering and restoration; capturing a particular sound source in extremely high-quality (vintage mixing consoles or other classic pieces of studio outboard); monitoring and listening applications that require the highest level of accuracy; or simply studios or Hi-Fi enthusiasts looking to add something to the recording chain that can be considered ‘end-game’.

This is really where the high-end bracket comes into play, with dedicated devices that have been designed to do one specific job extremely well, pushing a specific criteria to its highest level – a high-end AD/DA converter for example, where you’re paying for a small number of channels engineered to the finest quality.

Other circumstances may require a multi-channel AD/DA, and these are of course available in a range of price brackets too, such as the cost-effective Ferrofish Pulse 16 and A32 Series of converters that we also supply.

RME M-32 Pro AD - Synthax Audio UKEqually, RME’s M-32 AD Pro and M-32 DA Pro (pictured) offer a very similar level of conversion as the ADI-2 range in 32-channel offerings(!), making them perfect for high-end recording applications such as classical music, jazz and other ensemble acoustic or orchestral recordings.

In terms of audio quality, these devices typically provide an exceptional level of accuracy in terms of their abilities in capturing and reproducing recorded sound – think the representation of micro-dynamics, with subtleties like fingers on a fret-board becoming more pronounced; the attack of a stick on a snare drum really snapping through; or reverb tails holding their fade all the way to a natural conclusion without smearing. A high-end AD/DA essentially provides something of an audio microscope, allowing engineers (and audiophiles) to focus in on the really fine details of a recording.

The differences between high-end devices are certainly subjective and somewhat to taste. Most audio devices referred to as high-end should be of excellent quality, and as such differences in sound quality tend to be one of personal taste, rather than any being objectively ‘better’ (and indeed – some lend themselves better to different genres and even individual tracks or instruments, which is why a studio may have access to multiple different flavours of conversion).

To get the best out of these factors, other elements in your setup will also need to be similarly high-end – such as your monitors and headphones, microphones and preamps, as well as a room that’s been acoustically treated. All of these factors combined allow for a truly finessed audio experience, and will allow your AD/DA converters to shine.

RME ADI-2 FS - Perspective - Synthax Audio UKMastering-grade conversion at an affordable price

As mentioned above, most products labelled ‘high-end’ should provide very nice sound quality indeed. Other features aside, any differences in sound quality tend to be very slight – with this in mind, we’d argue that the RME ADI-2 FS presents a highly affordable offering for anyone looking to enter the world of high-end audio.

The ADI-2 Series offers the best sound quality for both A to D and D to A that you can currently get from any RME device, and having compared the ADI-2 Series with a selection of top-level converters from other manufacturers, we’re fully confident in saying that all three ADI-2 FS models can be compared favourably with other devices in the high-end bracket, and often at a fraction of the price of alternatives.

If you’re currently on the lookout for ‘end-game’ DA conversion quality for mastering and other high-end listening applications, the ADI-2 FS offers exactly that in a really quite affordable package.

Equally for those lucky enough to have a selection of high-quality ADCs in the studio, the ADI-2 FS presents a transparent, neutral and highly detailed option for straight analogue to digital conversion, whether that’s for individual instrument recording; capturing the sound of a favourite mic pre or other specialist studio outboard; using the ADI-2 FS as a front-end for a mixing console or final stage of a mix down; recording with 2 inch tape; or even for archiving and capturing analogue sources such as vinyl in extremely high quality.

RME Fireface 400 & 800 - Synthax Audio UKUpgrading the sound of an older interface (Fireface 400 & 800)

Another suggested application for the ADI-2 FS is for updating the quality of older RME interfaces, such as the discontinued Fireface 400 and Fireface 800. Despite their age, we’re fully aware that these interfaces remain popular to this day, and whilst they’re no doubt a solid option in terms of their reliability and continued support updates, it’s probably fair to say that the newer Firefaces and Babyface Pro FS outshine their older counterparts.

Things have moved on in the last 15 years, and as such, these interfaces are a perfect candidate for updated conversion via an ADI-2 FS, improving both the monitoring and providing an additional set of pristine recording inputs, not to mention the updated clocking offered by RME’s SteadyClock FS.

    SteadyClock FS

This brings us on nicely to the subject of clocking and connecting the ADI-2 FS with other equipment.

Our colleagues in Germany recently put together a video which covers SteadyClock FS in more depth (watch that here), but essentially accurate clocking is required to ensure high quality audio when synchronizing multiple digital devices, as well as providing a better frame of reference for other connected hardware.

SteadyClock FS can be easily selected as Clock Master via the front panel of the ADI-2 FS, setting the desired sample rate and clock source to internal. Additionally, the RME Fireface Settings window can be used for setting up your RME interface’s clocking on a Mac or Windows, selecting the clock source to external in our video example, and making sure the sample rate matches that of the ADI-2 FS.

How to connect the RME ADI-2 FS

The easiest way to connect the ADI-2 FS to an audio interface is via the ADAT, SPDIF or AES-3 connection, as found on pretty much all RME audio interfaces and Sound Cards.

The ADI-2 FS supports both optical and coaxial cabling – depending on your device, you’ll need to use either optical cables (aka ‘TOSLINK’), or digital coaxial cables with phono/RCA connectors.

To clarify, these three formats are all digital – as such, any A-D conversion is performed by the ADI-2 itself during a recording, before being passed to the computer via the connected interface or sound card.

Equally in the case of monitoring, the signal is passed digitally from the computer (via the interface or card) to the ADI-2, which then performs the D-A conversion for monitoring with speakers or headphones, or for sending the analogue signal on to inputs of another device.

RME TotalMix FX - Output Assign - Synthax Audio UKRouting in TotalMix FX

If you’re connecting with an RME audio interface, you can use RME’s TotalMix FX software controller to set your interface’s ADAT, SPDIF or AES-3 output as your master output.

As shown in our above video, simply open TotalMix FX and use the Assign Menu to select your desired output (bottom-right in TotalMix).

For example on the Firace UCX, the output channel labelled A/S is the level control for the ADAT/SPDIF channel. By choosing this channel as our master out, any audio we now route to this output (by raising faders in the top and middle rows in TotalMix) will be sent to the ADI-2 FS, allowing us to take advantage of the ADI-2 FS’s superior D-A conversion quality.

By setting the A/S channel as our master, we’re also able to take advantage of the additional features offered via the Control Room section, such as the Mono, Volume Recall and Dim buttons – particularly useful when combined with the RME ARC USB as a monitor controller!

    The affordable mastering-grade converter

Hopefully that’s given you a good understanding of how to set up the RME ADI-2 FS with an audio interface, as well as providing some examples of the circumstances in which you may benefit from a higher quality AD/DA.

The RME ADI-2 FS represents a true high-end converter at an affordable price, and will make a solid addition to any high-end studio recording or audiophile-level home setup without breaking the bank.

  • RME ADI-2 DAC FS review by John Darko

Comments Off on RME ADI-2 DAC FS review by John Darko

John Darko of Darko.Audio provides an in-depth review of the RME ADI-2 DAC FS.

Since its arrival in 2018, the RME ADI-2 DAC FS has become one of the RME’s most popular products, despite being a unique offering for a company that has traditionally cut its teeth in ‘pro’ rather than ‘home’ audio.

The production of reference-quality converters for studio and live audio has long been a mainstay of the company – however, it’s the ADI-2 Pro Series‘ huge potential for Hi-Fi crossover that originally caught the attention of audiophiles, and the ADI-2 DAC FS in particular has gone on to become something of a darling in the world of high-end Hi-Fi.

This latest review comes from the highly respected John Darko of Darko.Audio, who we’re proud to hear has designated RME’s USB-DAC and headphone amplifier as “the DAC to beat under 1000 euros”.

Many thanks to John for the fab review! Make sure you visit the Darko.Audio homepage for all of the latest high-end Hi-Fi news.

    RME ADI-2 DAC FS – Reference-Class USB-DAC & Headphone Amplifier

Built from the foundations of the ADI-2 Pro FS, the DAC FS takes the many features of of RME’s mastering-grade converter and adapts them for the Hi-Fi market.

Whilst retaining the main bones of the ADI-2 Pro series, the DAC features input and output options that better suit Hi-Fi and home listening. With connections for coaxial and optical SPDIF and ADAT, unbalanced RCA and balanced XLR, the DAC has an output option for every system.

Focussing on exceptional digital-to-analogue conversion, the ADI-2 DAC FS offers the transparent and balanced sound that RME are known for, and impressed John Darko who notes that “everything just sounded right”.

    “everything just sounded right”

RME ADI-2 DAC FS - Perspective - Synthax Audio UK

    Direct Connections for IEMs

RME’s “Extreme Power” headphone output is included for 6.3mm connections, offering the clearest and most detailed soundstage possible. This helps to reproduce pristine conversion quality regardless of the impedance of the headphones.

Another evolution of the DAC is its secondary headphone output, which is purpose-built for 3.5mm in-ear monitors. Designed to project the full dynamic range to even the most sensitive in-ears, the IEM output features a noise-floor even lower than the “Extreme Power” output.

John highlights these super-low-noise headphone outputs with their ramp-up volume feature, which “auto detects volume to give you time to react if something’s wrong”, saving expensive listening equipment and sensitive ears in the process.

“It’s many of the little things that come from its
internal DSP engine that I really, really dig”

On-Board DSP Processiong & Remote Control

The DAC’s DSP-powered processing is also a key talking point, with John also noting the ADI-2 DAC FS’s ‘Crossfeed’ feature, which allows a small amount of the left channel to be passed to the right channel (and vice versa), adjusting the soundstage to create what John found to be a “more forward focussed” sound.

“In terms of value for money, I’ve never come across a DAC
beneath a grand that offers so much”

With an abundance of additional features compared to your run-of-the-mill DAC, John concludes that he can’t think of any other DAC at this price-point “that does so much on top of excellent conversion and excellent headphone amplification.”

With a host of additional processing available such as Loudness, various Filter Types and an on-board parametric EQ, users can tweak the DAC’s sound to their liking, saving preferred settings to perfectly match any set of headphones. “All of this comes from the power of DSP,” John continues in the review. “Purists will be like ‘I’m not having DSP anywhere near my precious DA conversion’ – your loss, as there is so much more you can do with this DAC beyond decode music.”

*The* DAC to beat at €1K

With reference-quality conversion, a plethora of additional features and “extreme power” headphone outputs built into an attractive half rack unit, the ADI-2 DAC FS is the perfect centre-piece for hi-fi enthusiasts, bringing studio-quality sound into the home.

  • RME announces new HDSPe AIO Pro PCI Express Sound Card

Comments Off on RME announces new HDSPe AIO Pro PCI Express Sound Card

RME HDSPe AIO Pro - Synthax Audio UKRME updates the popular HDSPe AIO sound card with ADI-2 Pro level conversion, powerful new headphone amplifier, and SteadyClock FS.

RME introduces the HDSPe AIO Pro PCI Express interface card, the successor to the popular HDSPe AIO.

The Pro version provides professional users in the fields of studio and broadcast with the same high channel count, as well as analogue/digital input and output variety, of the HDSPe AIO.

In terms of technical features RME has completely reworked the HDSPe AIO Pro, defining the current state-of-the-art in PCI Express cards.

The HDSPe AIO Pro features a total of 30 channels (14 input, 16 output), each with a maximum of 24 bit/192 kHz. This PCI Express audio interface is an all-in-one solution, offering analogue stereo inputs and outputs, an additional headphone output, plus ADAT, SPDIF, AES/EBU and MIDI I/O. Like its predecessor, all in- and outputs can be used simultaneously.

RME HDSPe AIO Pro - Top - Synthax Audio UKReference-Class AD/DA Converters

The RME HDSPe AIO Pro is based on the reference processors (AK5572 and AK4490) derived from the award-winning RME ADI-2 Pro AD/DA converter, whilst the analogue input range also uses the same circuit design of the ADI-2 Pro (+24 / +19 / +13 / +4 dBu).

In addition, RME has enhanced the outputs with additional reference levels (balanced: +24 / +19 / +13 / +4 dBu; unbalanced: +19 / +13 / +4 / -2 dBu), allowing for even more versatile integration into a wide range of professional audio systems. A dedicated attenuator in the output section results in an increased signal-to-noise ratio, along with a lower output impedance at low reference levels.

SteadyClock FS – ‘FemtoSecond’ Clocking Technology

With SteadyClock FS, the HDSPe AIO Pro features RME’s latest digital clocking and jitter rejection technology. Based on a femtosecond clock (accurate to 10-15, or one quadrillionth of a second), SteadyClock FS reduces the intrinsic jitter when converting from and to analogue over all digital formats to a new all-time low.

RME HDSPe AIO Pro - PCIe Sound Card - Synthax Audio UKTransparent Headphone Output

A further highlight of the HDSPe AIO Pro is the newly developed, powerful and extremely transparent headphone output. Thanks to a dedicated mute relay, the HDSPe AIO Pro doesn’t suffer from unwanted noise, ‘crackling’ or ‘pops’ during computer startup.

This is true for the all of the analogue outputs (headphone, XLR and RCA), and at all switchable output levels.

TotalMix – Comprehensive monitoring and mixing control

Like all RME audio interfaces and sound cards, the HDSPe AIO Pro features RME’s TotalMix software mixer, providing full control over all analogue and digital inputs and outputs.

Any combination of audio channels can be combined and routed to the outputs as submixes, allowing for complete flexibility when creating monitor mixes or routing to external audio devices.

In addition, network control over the HDSPe AIO Pro is possible via the free TotalMix Remote app, and an additional set of audio analysis tools comes courtesy of RME’s DIGICheck software.

The RME HDSPe AIO Pro PCI Express card will be available from September 2020.

  • RME ADI-2 DAC FS review by TAWW (The Audiophile Weekend Warrior)

Comments Off on RME ADI-2 DAC FS review by TAWW (The Audiophile Weekend Warrior)

Self-described ‘nutty audiophile’ TAWW checks out the RME ADI-2 DAC FS.

RME ADI-2 DAC TAWW Review - Synthax Audio UK

Judging by the sheer number of glowing reviews, the RME ADI-2 DAC FS has to rank as one of RME’s most popular audio devices to date.

Alongside the many positive words written by some of the industry’s most respected publications, a variety of user reviews have sprung up online from bloggers and Youtubers who specialise in reviewing high-end Hi-Fi products.

And now we can add another to the list, with this latest review coming from audiphile blogger TAWW (The Audiophile Weekend Warrior).

    “absolutely packed with processing features…
…you name it, it’s probably got it”

Putting RME’s reference-class headphone amplifier and USB-DAC up against some far pricier options, TAWW says “the ADI-2 feels extremely sturdy and is clearly designed to withstand the rigors of studio and field use, something you certainly can’t say of the vast majority of audiophile gear. The rotary controls are firm and tactile, and everything feels designed for the highest level of utility and durability with zero fluff.”

As with many other reviews, TAWW was impressed by the long list of adjustable features, finding the ADI-2 DAC to be “absolutely packed with processing features. Adjustable digital filters, parametric EQ, tone controls, loudness contour, crossfeed for headphones – you name it, it’s probably got it.”

RME ADI-2 Pro FS Black Edition - Synthax Audio UKRME ADI-2 DAC FS – “First impressions: clean, clean, clean”

Of course, any review of a pro audio product needs an analysis of the the sound quality, which TAWW describes as having “Excellent resolution, smooth and neutral tonality. Very clear without being bright or clinical.”

Finishing off his review, TAWW writes that “the RME ADI-2 FS DAC is an excellent sounding piece worthy of audiophile credibility. And I haven’t even begun to tap into all its unique capabilities that no competitor I’m aware of can offer.”

ADI-2 Series Group - Synthax-Audio-UKThe RME ADI-2 series combines class-leading conversion with a comprehensive feature set, setting a new standard for mastering-grade audio converters.

The original ADI-2 Pro model is the brain-child of RME’s Head of Design Matthias Carstens, who designed it to be his own personal AD/DA converter and headphone amplifier (after he’d continually been disappointed other offerings on the market…).

An early prototype was shown at several trade shows around the world. Such was the positive feedback – with many passers-by asking “when’s it going to be available?” – the decision was made to release the device publicly, and the ADI-2 Pro quickly took the crown of RME’s best-sounding device to date.

The range has since been expanded into a selection of high-end recording and playback devices that cover a wide range of applications. Mastering engineers use the original ADI-2 Pro to handle front-end conversion duties, whilst Hi-Fi enthusiasts continue to be impressed by the ADI-2 DAC FS, for its combination of exquisite DA conversion and powerful headphone amplification.

With the entire product series built into compact half-rack 9.5” casings, each one packs a huge amount of features and I/O into a reference-class audio device that can easily slot into even the smallest of studios.

    SteadyClock FS

Every product in the ADI-2 series features RME’s SteadyClock FS clocking technology. This new and improved version of SteadyClock guarantees superb sound regardless of the reference clock quality.

There is little to improve with the original SteadyClock, having earned its accolades over the years with flawless operation in numerous RME devices. SteadyClock FS improves on some already impressive figures by lowering the self-jitter specs to “FemtoSeconds”, and guarantees the internal clock produces exactly the same when using an external one.

The ADI-2 FS takes a “no-frills” approach to audio conversion, taking the same advanced analogue circuitry of the award-winning ADI-2 Pro and offering outstanding conversion at up to 192kHz. Incredible audio quality and an attractive price are just two things that make the ADI-2 FS a fantastic and affordable entry point into RME’s professional converter series.

Its first-class conversion is further bolstered by its outstanding compatibility. The ADI-2 FS features two balanced analogue inputs via XLR/TRS combo connections and dedicated XLR and line level outputs, for capturing signals from an analogue mixing console or other high-end outboard gear. Like the ADI-2 Pro, the analogue inputs offer outstandingly low noise and distortion values, as well as an extended frequency response (right down to 5Hz!).

Additionally, the available digital I/O covers SPDIF, AES and ADAT formats, allowing for quick connection to a range of setups, with ADAT I/O in particular found on a wide range of audio interfaces from any manufacturer. As such, studio users can easily integrate the ADI-2 FS into their existing setup simply by connecting an ADAT optical cable (or two) to both devices, instantly benefitting from the high-end sonics of the ADI-2 Series.

The ADI-2 FS features an easy-to-operate front panel, with input and output monitoring at a glance and level control available at the turn of a knob.

Like the rest of the ADI-2 series, the ADI-2 FS features a high-quality, high-power headphone output. This is based around the proven High Power output found on many of RME’s other products, and with a maximum output level of +19 dBu and very low output noise, the ADI-2 FS operates universally with all headphone driver types.

    Flexible I/O

In terms of connectivity, the two servo-balanced analogue inputs on combo XLR / TRS jacks, two separate balanced and unbalanced outputs on XLR and TS, two stereo Extreme Power headphone outputs on the front, an optical SPDIF I/O that also understands ADAT, and coaxial SPDIF (RCA) and AES I/O (XLR) via an included breakout cable.

What’s more, the ADI-2 Pro FS R’s USB 2.0 port is fully Class Compliant. This means the incredible audio conversion of the ADI-2 Pro FS R is available for use with an iPhone or iPad.

    Ultra-Fidelity 768kHz conversion

Aiming for the absolute reference sound, any detail in the ADI-2 Pro is special and has its own story. Supporting 786 kHz sample rate and DSD recording, two individual premium DACs are used for the two separate stereo outputs. The main PCB is an extraordinary 10 layer design with custom copper thickness, guaranteeing the finest undisturbed sound, as well as ample but separated power for the phones outputs.

Advanced Features – EQ, Loudness and Crossfeed

Both the ADI-2 DAC FS and ADI-2 Pro FS R feature on-board DSP processing, enabling advanced features like applying corrective EQ to all outputs (including separately for left and right channels), and a re-designed version of the ‘Loudness’ function found on many traditional Hi-Fi devices (see p14 of the RME ADI-2 DAC manual for a more detailed explanation).

Another powerful (and fun!), easily overlooked feature is ‘Crossfeed’. Traditionally when listening to music through headphones, audio is played back exclusively from the left and right channels, with no overlap between the two. When listening to live music or through speakers however, sound is of course hitting our ears from all directions, both from the location of the performer / speakers, and from reflections off of any nearby walls and surfaces.

With Crossfeed applied, small amounts of the left channel are fed into the right channel and vice versa, resulting in a more natural listening experience which is closer to that of using speakers. This effect has also been described as giving digital audio a more ‘analogue’ sound, as explained by Alan Sircom in his ADI-2 DAC review for HiFi+ magazine. “This gives headphones a more out-of-head presentation and makes digital seem a little more like a turntable, in all the right ways” Alan writes. “The sound takes on a depth to the image and an organic sense of physical presence that those of us firmly dunked in analogue replay will love.”

    With the ADI-2 DAC and Pro FS R, Crossfeed can be applied in 5 increasing increments (or switched off entirely), giving you plenty of options to play with if you’d like to experiment with this unique aspect of headphone audio;

    1: 650 Hz, -13 dB (just a touch)

2: 650 Hz, -9.5 dB (Jan Meier emulation)

3: 700 Hz, -6 dB (Chu Moy emulation)

    4: 700 Hz, -4.5 dB (30° 3 meter emulation)

5: 700 Hz, -3 dB (example how even stronger would sound)

RME ADI-2 DAC FS - Synthax Audio UKRME ADI-2 DAC FS

Whilst the ADI-2 Pro FS R BE lends itself equally towards the needs of studio professionals, RME knew that with some innovation, a version could be created to meet the specific needs of home and Hi-Fi users.

The RME ADI-2 DAC FS is the result of these innovations – a reference-class USB-DAC and Extreme Power headphone amplifier.

    Reference-class DA conversion at home

Operating up to the same incredible 768kHz sample rate as the ADI-2 Pro FS R, the ADI-2 DAC FS focusses on providing reference class DA conversion for a glorious, high-end listening experience.

The ADI-2 DAC FS also uses AKM’s AK4493 chipset in a special circuit variant developed by RME engineers that allows the chip to perform at its best. The operating figures are simply outstanding, with noise levels of 123 dBA, distortion less than -120 dB, or THD+N of -117 dB.

Much like its studio-centred counterpart, the DAC has versatility at its heart, with balanced and unbalanced analogue I/O; Extreme Power headphone output and a dedicated low-noise connection for IEMs; and Class Compliant USB compatibility. This compatibility makes it perfect for improving the output of an iPhone or iPad, with the connection made via a USB cable and Apple’s Camera Connection Kit.

    Extreme Power Headphone Output

Hi-Fi enthusiasts wouldn’t be without high-quality headphones for solo listening, reproducing every nuance of the sound they are playing. Modern headphones and in-ear monitors are incredibly detailed and sensitive with a dynamic range to match. For this reason alone, a headphone amplifier that does them justice is an absolute necessity.

That’s why the ADI-2 DAC FS features the same Extreme Power headphone output as the ADI-2 Pro FS R, offering unparalleled low noise performance even with low impedance headphones.

RME ADI-2 DAC - Screen - Synthax Audio UK_14_12_2017AutoDark Mode – performance without distraction

The finishing touches of the ADI-2 DAC FS fits it perfectly into any modern hi-fi or home audio system, with the inclusion of the all-new Multi Remote Control (see below) and AutoDark mode.

Operation without distraction was a request made time and again by Hi-Fi users – as such, the RME ADI-2 DAC FS includes an ‘AutoDark’ mode, automatically switching off the screen and any lighting for totally discreet operation. Using the remote will switch the screen back on again for 3 seconds, allowing you to see the control change, before disappearing again.

Small touches like these has seen the RME ADI-2 DAC FS quickly rise to become an important player in the Hi-Fi market, with a flood of positive reviewers praising the clean conversion RME is already so well known for in the world of studios and live audio.
