13th Note HiFi Review - RME ADI-2 DAC FS - Synthax Audio UKSimon Price of audiophile website 13th Note gives his opinion of the RME ADI-2 DAC FS.

Click here to read the full review.

Many visitors to this site will be aware that the RME ADI-2 DAC FS represents a something of an unusual product for RME, whose product range has traditionally consisted of audio interfaces, multi-channel AD and DA converters, microphone preamps, PCI / PCIe soundcards, and MADI and audio networking devices.

The German manufacturer’s name is synonymous with the various professional audio sectors – recording studios, live playback, broadcast audio, education and scientific applications. As such, the ADI-2 Series’ crossover appeal has marked a new journey for the company, with the DAC in particular catching the eye of many a Hi-Fi aficionado.

This popularity also influenced the company’s recent redesign of the original ADI-2 Pro FS model. Announced earlier this year at NAMM 2020, the new RME ADI-2 Pro FS R Black Edition is an AD and DA variant with the same all-black finish as its sibling, replacing the original’s silver/blue-fronted look with a design that lends itself stylistically to domestic Hi-Fi setups.

In addition, the ADI-2 Pro FS R Black Edition also ships with the newly updated RME MRC (Multi-Remote-Control), the customisable remote control that’s included with the RME ADI-2 DAC (from December 2019 onwards).

The A-D (analogue to digital) conversion provides an extra option for high-end stereo recording, matching the exquisite sound quality of the ADI-2 Series’ D-A section and giving studio engineers the ability to capture instruments, external hardware and mixing consoles directly into a DAW at a stunning level of detail.

For Hi-Fi users, this A-D capability offers the chance to convert and archive analogue source recordings at an incredibly high resolution – a vinyl collection for example – with sample rates up to 768 kHz supported for PCM and DSD recording.

“A Qutest Killer?” – 13th Note Reviews the RME ADI-2 DAC FS

Of the four currently available ADI-2 Series devices, the RME ADI-2 DAC FS remains the standout choice for Hi-Fi users whose sole requirement is a high-end playback solution. As a combined USB-DAC and headphone amplifier, the ADI-2 DAC can be used for standalone listening enjoyment with a Mac, PC or media device, or as part of a larger Hi-Fi system.

The device has racked up a host of positive reviews from the likes of Sound On Sound, Headfonics and Resolution Magazine, with the latest coming from Simon Price of audiophile website 13th Note. And we were pleased to learn he also found plenty to love about RME’s high-end DAC and headphone amp combo.

“What immediately comes across in this DAC in benchmarking it with others I’ve tested, is a precise, accurate and resolving sound that makes it very natural,” Simon writes, going on to describe the ADI-2 DAC FS as a “swashbuckling resolver” and an “other league accuracy champion”.

“This is a DAC punching as a heavyweight but at relative welterweight prices…
…value for money is incredibly stellar here.”

Finishing off his review, Simon states he found the ADI-2 DAC FS to be “a very accomplished product. It wins my vote and is a 13th Note performer very convincingly.”

Many thanks to Simon / 13th Note Hi-Fi for the great review!

  2. NAMM 2020 Video – RME ADI-2 Pro FS R Black Edition overview

Comments Off on NAMM 2020 Video – RME ADI-2 Pro FS R Black Edition overview

Product Specialist Adrian Lehmann shows us round RME’s new flagship AD/DA converter with remote control

Things just keep getting better and better with the RME ADI-2 Series. After last year’s announcement that the ADI-2 DAC FS has been updated with the latest AKM converter chips and an extended remote control, RME also unleashed a revised version of the ADI-2 Pro FS at NAMM 2020, in the form of the RME ADI-2 Pro FS R (Black Edition).

In our fourth RME video from NAMM 2020, RME’s Adrian Lehmann gives us a run-through of all four ADI-2 Series converters, from the stripped back RME ADI-2 FS to the feature-laden RME ADI-2 Pro FS R.

RME ADI-2 Pro FS R Black Edition

Put simply, the ADI-2 Pro FS R is the highest quality audio converter currently available from RME. Combining transparent, highly detailed audio capture and playback, the ADI-2 FS R represents the ultimate ‘end-game’ recording and monitoring device.

Reviewers have been equally impressed by the standard set, with quotes such as “This is clearly quite a beast of a converter, both in terms of its technical prowess and its operational flexibility” (Sound On Sound), and “Even in a raw state, RME has delivered a formidable DAC/amp combo that is worth more than the asking price” (Headfonics).

The device is an audiophile’s dream, boasting a somewhat dizzying array of options and functionality. From the 2 x “Extreme Power” headphone outputs and extensive remote control; options for cross-feed and anti-aliasing filter types; to independent EQs for each individual output; true frequency reproduction all the way down to 5Hz; and asynchronous sample rate conversion and sample rates up to 768 kHz (DSD recording and playback).

The new all-black finish means the ADI-2 Pro FS R slots in perfectly with any modern Hi-Fi setup, as well as offering mastering-grade monitoring and recording for music producers and recording engineers. The ‘sonic signature’ is the most transparent to date from RME, and the built-in 5-band parametric EQ allows for further tonal control adjustments of music, headphones, monitors and applying room correction.

  3. RME updates the ADI-2 DAC with new MRC remote control and AK4493 converter chip

Comments Off on RME updates the ADI-2 DAC with new MRC remote control and AK4493 converter chip RME ADI-2 DAC - MRC - New Remote Control - Synthax Audio UK

New ‘MRC’ remote control adds additional button functionality

RME has announced the release of a newly revised version of the RME ADI-2 DAC, with an updated chipset and extended remote control.

While the basic features and functions of the ADI-2 DAC remain the same, all future units will ship with the MRC (Multi-Remote-Control), a larger infrared remote with a host of additional buttons. What’s more, RME have hinted that the MRC will also be compatible with up to four other ‘future RME devices’ (only the ADI-2 DAC is currently supported).

With the ADI-2 DAC, RME created a flexible and high-end digital to analogue converter that has truly taken the Hi-Fi scene by storm. On a technical level the device symbolises a new milestone for RME, taking the company’s signature, transparent sonics to formerly unprecedented levels of detail.

A dizzying array of customisation options and functionality rounds off this supremely impressive little box, which continues to see new features added with each firmware update.

    MRC – Multi-Remote-Control

The MRC is an extended version of the previous remote, with additional buttons designed for the most commonly used functions, namely switching loudness, parametric EQ, and bass/treble on and off. In addition, there are keys for direct control of bass, treble and balance.

With these additional keys, all typically used functions of the device are now accessible directly from the remote control. The four programmable buttons 1 through 4, a unique feature also found on the original ADI-2 DAC remote, can still be programmed with a personal selection of 32 commands/actions.

Current owners of the ADI-2 DAC can also take advantage of the new MRC, which is also available to purchase separately as an accessory, so long as your device is running the latest firmware (at least version FPGA 27, DSP 33).

Improved performance with new AK4493 chip

RME have also announced that all future ADI-2 DAC’s will feature the AKM AK4493 chip for its D to A conversion.

RME’s Head of Design, Matthias Carstens, explains, “The use of an AK4493 (previously 4490) improves the signal-to-noise ratio from 117 dB to 120 db (123 dBA). At the same time the distortion decreases by about 10 dB, to a fantastic -120 dB at full digital level. The sensational -118 dBu, which resulted in complete freedom from noise at the IEM output, is now even better at -120 dBu.”

“On top there is now an additional headroom of 2.5 dB for the analog outputs XLR, RCA and IEM, which also raises the undistorted intersample peak limit to a generous +4 dBFS.”

“With the changes to the device and the new, extended remote control, RME aims at perfecting an already perfect device.”

  6. HiFi Wigwam (The WAM) reviews the RME ADI-2 DAC

Comments Off on HiFi Wigwam (The WAM) reviews the RME ADI-2 DAC

HiFi Wigwam Logo - Synthax Audio UK RME ADI-2 DAC - HiFi Wigwam Review - Synthax Audio UKHiFi Wigwam reviews the RME ADI-2 DAC

RME’s ADI-2 DAC is a high-end playback and monitoring device with major crossover appeal, successfully planting a foot in the worlds of both Pro Audio and HiFi.

Transparent and highly accurate audio combines with formidable options for tweaking, and an on-board 5-band parametric EQ allows for adjusting the playback to match with any headphones and speakers you can throw at it (note: don’t throw speakers and headphones at it).

A string of highly positive reviews from well-known magazines and websites like Sound On Sound, Headfonics and Resolution Magazine brought the DAC to the attention of HiFi Wigwam, a forum dedicated to high-end audio discussion.

Pro audio devices often have a reputation in HiFi for being sonically too ‘clinical’ for use as a playback device. Reviewer George Sallit was therefore pleasantly surprised by the ADI-2 DAC’s sound, describing it as “neutral, 3D, with great clarity. In fact, I might even say it was on the warm side of neutral. Surprise 1.”

“Designed and built in Germany, by beautiful old men…”

The world of HiFi is also known for its love of technical detail, and as such the review includes a short interview with the ADI-2 DAC’s designer Matthias Carstens, answering questions on the choice of chipset, the NOS filter, and confirming the DAC is built entirely in Germany by ‘beautiful old men’.

George wraps up the review by concluding that the ADI-2 DAC was better than his “£1K references, already the best sub-£1K DACs I had heard, and it could be preferred to another twice as expensive.”

“I then left the test tracks behind and just played the music that appealed to me at that time, as opposed to being in reviewer mode with pen in hand and notebook at the ready. For me, that is a great sign as I am starting to enjoy the music.”

RME ADI-2 DAC With Remote Control - Black - Synthax Audio UKAbout the RME ADI-2 DAC

Boasting a feature set that will excite both HiFi enthusiasts and audio professionals, the ADI-2 DAC is a true reference-class converter with an incredible level of flexibility. All outputs can be adjusted to suit any pair of headphones or speakers via the independent 5-band parametric EQs found on each channel (independent for left and right). Each output’s EQ settings can then be saved to one of the ADI-2 DAC’s onboard memory slots for easy recall.

You’ll also find bass and treble switches, along with a ‘Loud’ mode – legacy features with a nod to traditional HiFi setups. These are also user-adjustable, so you’ll be able to quickly add the perfect amount of bass boost to a dance track, or instantly dial up the treble on an old jazz record.

Other unique features include automatic recognition of headphone impedance, ensuring you’ll always have enough volume regardless of your choice of cans, along with automatic volume reduction to prevent against accidental damage to your headphones (or ears!). RME even added a unique feature called ‘AutoDark’, for switching off all lights on the device when you want to enjoy music in total darkness.

More advanced features include adjustable crossfeed, which blends the left and right channels slightly for a more natural listening experience; a choice of 5 different anti-aliasing filters; and DSD playback and sample rates up to 768 kHz. The ADI-2 DAC is also class compliant / plug ‘n’ play with Windows, Mac and iOS devices.

A first for an RME device, the ADI-2 DAC features a remote control, which can be customised to provide quick control over your most commonly used features. Along with volume, power on/off and input selection, the remote features four additional user-definable buttons, with a total of 21 different parameters available for customising the remote to your liking.

Since its release, the RME ADI-2 DAC has received strong praise from both magazines and users, with Sound On Sound writing that they’re “very impressed with all that it can do, and the ease and quality with which it does it!”, and Headfonics going as far as to say they “can’t think of any other desktop DAC/amp combo that would be easier to recommend”.

  7. RME ADI-2 DAC Competition Winner Announced

Comments Off on RME ADI-2 DAC Competition Winner Announced

RME ADI-2 DAC - Jac Jones - Synthax Audio UKCongratulations to the winner of our RME ADI-2 DAC Competition Giveaway

Earlier this year we decided it was time for another Synthax / RME UK competition giveaway. And having previously given away an RME Fireface UFX II in 2017, and an RME Babyface Pro in 2018, we felt it was time for one lucky musician, producer or audiophile to get their hands on an RME ADI-2 DAC, the high-end headphone amplifier and USB-DAC from RME’s professional range of AD/DA converters.

And we’re pleased to announce the winner of our RME ADI-2 DAC competition is Jac Jones of Walthamstow, whose name was pulled at random from the Synthax Audio UK hat!

A saxophonist and recording enthusiast, Jac also owns an RME Fireface 400 audio interface, which he plans to hook up with the ADI-2 DAC (via SPDIF) for additional high-end monitoring and playback duties.

“I usually use the Fireface 400’s ADAT for extra pre amps,” says Jack. “I have 4 analogue pres, plus the 2 on the Fireface 400, so if I’m recording full bands / drums I often need the extra channels. So it’s great that the ADI-2 DAC also has SPDIF, meaning I can keep the Fireface’s ADAT free for recording.”

“I’ll also be making use of the DAC’s dedicated output for IEMs. Often when I’m setting up mics in a live space, with no isolation from the instruments (i.e. a control room), I’ve found IEMs can give me better separation over open or even closed-back headphones (you can put heavy duty ear defenders over the top – double bag it!), which helps me find the right mic placement. So that’s a bonus!”

RME ADI-2 DAC - News Image - Synthax Audio UK“I’ve not had chance to mess around with the DAC properly yet as I’m moving house and just had a baby, so things are a bit crazy! I’ve read some good reviews though – it looks the business!”

Thanks Jac, and enjoy your new ADI-2 DAC!

Big thanks to everyone who entered, stay tuned to our newsletter, Facebook and Twitter for more competitions and great prizes in the future.

  8. RME ADI-2 DAC now supports third party remotes such as Logitech Harmony

Comments Off on RME ADI-2 DAC now supports third party remotes such as Logitech Harmony

RME ADI-2 DAC - Firmware Update - Logitech HarmonyThe latest firmware update adds further integration with home media and smart devices.

Never one to rest on their laurels, RME have continued to add features to their award-winning RME ADI-2 DAC with each additional firmware update. This has frequently been in response to direct requests from users, with the RME forum being a great place to share feedback and ideas for future updates.

With this latest version (30), the big news is that the ADI-2 DAC now includes support for programmable third party remote controls, such as the Logitech Harmony.

The ADI-2 DAC ships with its own included remote control of course, with 4 user-definable buttons that can be assigned to 31 different commands (mono, EQ on/off, Loudness on/off etc).

However, if you’d like even more control from the comfort of your sofa, remote controllers like the Logitech Harmony provide an even larger range of options, with more buttons and touch-screen control. What’s more, third-party remotes can often be used to control a variety of smart devices, home media and entertainment centres, allowing the ADI-2 DAC to be further integrated with home cinema and HiFi setups.

RME’s ADI-2 DAC enters remote paradise!

Here’s what RME’s Head of Design Matthias Carstens had to say about this latest update.

“Users that own a freely programmable remote, either as part of a home automation system, a self-build with infrared transmitters, or a programmable remote from renowned manufacturer Logitech, can now use their remote to control the ADI-2 DAC,” says Matthias.

“RME released a document listing all the supported remote commands and codes, and Logitech added all these commands/codes to their data base for the RME ADI-2 DAC.”

“The new, extended remote support covers more than the original 11 buttons of RME’s handy inclusion. Users now also have direct access to the 31 ‘remap’ actions/commands, with no remapping necessary.”

“The infrared code list also includes Bass +/-, Treble +/-, and Balance Left/Right control. Yes, these functions can now also be remote controlled, if you have a programmable remote with enough buttons.”

  9. RME ADI-2 Pro FS on test with Pro Tools Expert

Comments Off on RME ADI-2 Pro FS on test with Pro Tools Expert

RME ADI-2 Pro FS on test with Pro Tools Expert - Synthax Audio UKPro Tools / Production Expert reviews the RME ADI-2 Pro FS, with a particular focus on the A–D conversion.

We never get tired of talking about the RME ADI-2 Pro series! RME’s best sounding converters to date, the ADI-2 Pro FS (and its sibling, the ADI-2 DAC) is a pro audio box of tricks like no other at this price-point, with features galore and an unprecedented level of sonic detail.

Hot off the heels of picking up another award (SOS Awards 2019), the ADI-2 Pro FS has just received a review from James Ivey of Pro-Tools-Expert.com, who’s been trialling the ADI-2 Pro FS in his studio for several months now.

James has taken a slightly different approach with this review, opting to run the ADI-2 Pro FS as a front-end for his analogue mixing console over the past couple of months. Whereas most reviewers have tended to focus on the extremely high quality of the D/A conversion, James has been busy testing the digital to analogue side, using the device to print mixes from his desk to his DAW.

“The new ADI-2 Pro FS from RME is one of that amazing breed of problem solvers.
It packs a lot of features and processing into a very small 1/2U rack space.”

RME ADI-2 Pro - Synthax Audio UKOf his time testing out the ADI-2 Pro FS (which he decided to buy after!), James concludes the unit is “an absolute snip when compared to some of the seriously high end AD/DA or DAC converters. RME have really crammed a great deal into this half U rack unit, and I’m sure even if you are not employing a hybrid workflow, the ADI-2 Pro has something to offer your studio, post or live production facility.”

Comments Off on RME ADI-2 Pro FS AD/DA Converter wins “Highly Commended” Award in the Sound On Sound Awards 2019

RME ADI-2 Pro FS - Sound Awards 2019 - Synthax Audio UKThe RME ADI-2 Pro FS wins the Highly Commended Award in the ‘Best New Computer Audio Interface’ category.

Sound On Sound has released the full list of winners from its 2019 Awards. Paying tribute to the best pro audio products released throughout the year, the SOS Awards recognises the latest software and hardware developments, honouring innovations in design, technological prowess, and of course sound quality.

The winners are voted for by readers of the magazine, with nominations chosen from the products with the strongest reviews of the past 12 months.

And we’re pleased to report that the RME ADI-2 Pro FS, RME’s flagship 2-channel AD/DA converter and headphone amplifier, has been given the Highly Commended Award in the ‘Best New Computer Audio Interface’ category!

In the magazine review, SOS’s Hugh Robjohns said of the ADI-2 Pro FS, “In short, every test I performed was unreservedly superb!”, and that “I can’t think of another two-channel A-D/D-A converter that can match
the ADI-2 Pro’s versatility, and few can match its technical performance.”

Big thanks to Sound On Sound, and to everyone who voted and continues to support RME!

  11. HiFi+ Magazine reviews the RME ADI-2 DAC Headphone Amplifier and USB-DAC

Comments Off on HiFi+ Magazine reviews the RME ADI-2 DAC Headphone Amplifier and USB-DAC

HiFi+ Magazine tests out the RME ADI-2 DAC

A firm favourite here at the Synthax Audio UK offices, the RME ADI-2 DAC has received a string of positive reviews from the likes of Sound On Sound, Resolution Magazine, as well as Headfonics who said “I can’t think of any other desktop DAC/amp combo that would be easier to recommend in 2018.”

Combining a powerful headphone amplifier with the most accurate audio conversion RME have produced to date, the ADI-2 DAC punches well above its weight, and is regularly mentioned in the same breath as converters that cost twice as much and higher.

HiFi+ Magazine is the latest publication to take the ADI-2 DAC for a spin, with reviewer Alan Sircom impressed by the flexible feature set, and of the course the superb sound quality.

“one can’t help but be deeply swayed by that degree
of interaction with the RME’s control architecture”

Alan writes, “one can’t help but be deeply swayed by that degree of interaction with the RME’s control architecture”, and that “You can really ‘hear into a mix’, easily differentiating electronic reverb tails from natural acoustic reverberant spaces. The RME is also great at delineating instruments and voices in a complex mix…”

He was also particularly taken with the ADI-2 DAC’s Crossfeed features, designed to emulate the experience of listening to speakers by adding small amounts of the left channel into the right, and vice versa. “This gives headphones a more out-of-head presentation and makes digital seem a little more like a turntable, in all the right ways” Alan writes. “The sound takes on a depth to the image and an organic sense of physical presence that those of us firmly dunked in analogue replay will love.”

“You can really ‘hear into a mix’…”

In his conclusion, Alan points out that the level of detail offered by the ADI-2 DAC can show the true colours of less than stellar recordings, writing “if you want your DAC to give less than great recordings a soft-landing, look elsewhere; that resolution is always present, always a can opener into the studio… good and bad.” As Alan rightly notes, this is an indication of the ADI-2 DAC’s studio roots, and if you plan to use it for recording and music production, this level of honesty is of course exactly what you want from your converter.

  12. RME launches the ADI-2 FS AD/DA converter at IBC 2018

Comments Off on RME launches the ADI-2 FS AD/DA converter at IBC 2018

RME ADI-2 FS - Angle - Synthax Audio UKRME have chosen IBC 2018 to unveil the RME ADI-2 FS, the latest addition to their range of professional AD/DA converters.

A compact and flexible 2-channel AD/DA and format converter, the ADI-2 FS offers high-end analogue audio conversion to and from SPDIF, AES and ADAT, at sample rates up to 192 kHz. The three digital connections provide compatibility with a wide range of professional and consumer audio devices, with options for both SPDIF/ADAT optical I/O, and SPDIF/ AES-EBU coaxial I/O.

Other notable features include balanced analogue inputs and outputs; a High Power headphone output for monitoring; 3-stage hardware input and output level controls; and new A-A and D-D modes, for using the ADI-2 FS as a high-quality headphone amplifier and digital format converter.

The ADI-2 FS also features SteadyClock FS, RME’s highly impressive clocking technology that provides jitter specs all the way down to the FemtoSecond, ensuring maximum jitter suppression and incredibly low self-jitter. SteadyClock FS also guarantees superb sound quality, completely independent from the quality of other reference clocks.

    RME ADI-2 Series Converters

The newest member of RME’s high-end ADI-2 Series family, the ADI-2 FS shares many similarities with its critically acclaimed siblings, the RME ADI-2 Pro FS and RME ADI-2 DAC. The two servo-balanced XLR/TRS analogue inputs use the same advanced circuit design of the award-winning ADI-2 Pro, providing an extended frequency response and offering outstanding low levels of noise and distortion. The ADI-2 FS also uses the conversion technology of the ADI-2 Pro: the AK557x family and the AK4490 converter chips not only offer 192 kHz sampling frequency and extremely low distortion, but also a dynamic range of 120 dBA.

Alongside the pristine sound quality, the ADI-2 FS also offers a range of digital format conversion options. The coaxial RCA SPDIF I/O has a switchable Channel Status to make it fully AES/EBU compatible (cable adapter required). Additionally, the optical TOSLINK I/O can handle up to 192 kHz and also serve as ADAT I/O (even at 192 kHz). Outputting incoming SPDIF signals as ADAT (and vice versa) is also supported, in both AD/DA and D-D mode.

    RME ADI-2 FS - Front & Back Panels - Synthax Audio UKThe new ADI-2 FS features 2x balanced analogue I/O; 1x High-Power headphone output; 1x SPDIF/ADAT Optical I/O; 1x SPDIF/AES coxial I/O;
support for samples rates up to 192 kHz; and comprehensive front panel controls.

    Front Panel Control

The ADI-2 FS features a logical and informative front-panel, with clear and distinctive labelling and informative status displays. A 6 LED level meter also provides input level information at a glance, making the RME ADI-2 FS extremely simple to operate straight out of the box.

The RME ADI-2 FS will be on show at IBC 2018 in Amsterdam at the RME booth 8.D70 (14th – 18th September 2018).
